If Alyx required a VR headset, Half-Life 3 is gonna require that brainchip.

      • 10 months

        Pass.

Especially if it’s anything like the story of Alyx.

edit: Apparently, not liking a fanfiction.net tier story that undoes the emotionally charged ending of the last game and brings back a character who’s voice acgtor died is a contentious opinion. Well, it’s not like new-Valve gives a shit about VAs reprising their roles. They couldn’t be bother to ask Merle Dandridge to come back in any capacity.

    • Valve has said on at least a couple occasions they don’t really have interest in making games anymore, unless there is some new technology they get interested in that they can make a game around.

The HL2 episodes were basically tests for different source engine technologies.

Alyx was basically then playing around with VR.

So yeah, I can totally see some weird fucked up thing like a brainchip being what HL3 is built around, if HL3 ever stops being anything more than a syphilitic hallucination of a desperate mind.

All their games are tests for different technologies or business models. In hindsight, Gabe has never cared about the story of Half-Life. He just happened to have hired a good writer for HL1 and HL2 by accident. It’s why I’m more interested in the fanon then the canon at this point. Half-Life: Echoes and Entropy: Zero are criminally underplayed.

        • I want to know how Half Life ends. I couldnt give a shit about fan shit. Some of its good and engaging, not putting it down, but its not relative to the current issue… I want the conclusion to the fucking story I paid for and got massively invested in, in 2004. That I bought the next chapters of in 2006 and 2007.

Two things piss me off like nothing else when it comes to media.

Stories that leave you on a cliffhanger and never finish.

and Stories that are amazing all the way up until the end, when someone just decides to squeeze a big fat wet turd out and said good enough (Fucking mass effect…)

I’d rather spend 18 years being blueballed and cockteased by Bea Arthur.

          • 10 months

I would like to know how Marc Laidlaw was going to end the story. Well, we have Epistle Three, but it’s not the same as if he had stayed on board. Entropy: Zero Two is staying closer to what Marc Laidlaw’s laid out in Epistle Three then anything Alyx decided to do.

Hell, I’ve become disinterested in the Halo franchise because of the revolving door of writers constantly throwing out the previous team’s ideas. The moment new writers come in, the line between canon and fanon starts blurring.

Cannot believe people are still talking about this 20 years later…

    • 10 months

People still want a good Star Wars sequel.
      Hope burns long.

      • 10 months

My wife asked me when we’re watching Star Wars. I told her “When the story is finished”.

        • 10 months

From my point of view Star Wars was finished the second Disney acquired it.

          • 10 months

            All Star Wars suck balls.

I can’t believe people like it for any other reason than nostalgia.

There are so many better pieces of media.

            • 10 months

I feel like people believe this because the next two movies were so awful. I’ve always felt like the force awakening was worse than the prequels. None of the good story telling from a new hope was transferred.

          • 10 months

The Last Jedi is top 3 out of the Skywalker movies easily.

In a few short years, you’ll see. The sequels will be redeemed just as the prequels before them. Time is a flat circle.

              • 10 months

The most I’ve heard is “They aren’t as bad as the sequels”

                • Funny, because I still say the sequels aren’t as bad as the prequels.

            • 10 months

Stunning visuals maybe but damn the story was bad and ruined any internal consistency of the space battles in the entire franchise. Rogue one is the only good Disney SW movie, Solo is fine too

            • 10 months

nah. the sequels were fun in an initial watch, but have no staying power. they are just bullet point reshoots of the original trilogy. the prequels have issues but at least they are actually original ideas.

              • 10 months

The prequels needed a better director. The sequels needed a writer.

            • 10 months

I can’t say never, but TRoS is a fucking awful movie (not just as Star Wars, but a terrible cinematic experience) and I think it’s really damn hard to redeem a trilogy with that as a bookend.

              • Also the fact that the second and third instalments barely feel like sequels let alone continuations of storylines retroactively made The Force Awakens worse. And it was only kind alright before.

            • 10 months

I think only the first episode has been “redeemed” in any way. Mostly because the pod race and darth maul.

The other two are still horrible.

              • 10 months

They’ve been redeemed because they’ve opened such a rich world in the form of the TV shows and books. TCW and Rebels expanded on lore greatly.

      • Alyx is not HL3, and I don’t get it when people say it is.

HL2E2 ended and we were left partway through a story that never received an ending.

        • I didn’t say it was HL3. I replied to a post implying the series hasn’t had an update in 20 years.

It’d be like a Star Wars fan wondering why there’s buzz about the movie coming out next year despite it being 42 years since Return of the Jedi. And the answer is that even if that’s the last one that particular fan personally cared about, there has been Star Wars media since then.

Also, Alyx did resolve the HL2E2 ending. It didn’t add a whole lot on past that, but the cliffhanger was very much addressed.

    • 10 months

To be fair we know that a HL Sequel was worked on by Valve several times but always scrapped in various stages of production. So the rumours really came from somewhere reasonable and not just from pure speculation and desperation.

  • 10 months

As if anyone would still be around for Half-life 4 anyway

    • 10 months

Tbh my existenial paranoia kind of took it that HL3 would start irl and I was one of those civilian models.

  • 10 months

Imagine getting HL3 before GTA6. The meme potential would be out of this world

  • 10 months

Hey, I’ll take anything over being stuck on the cliffhanger of Eli’s death for 20 years, and wrap up the whole Combine story as best as possible.

    • 10 months

      cliffhanger of Eli’s death

Uhhh your missing a game there bud.

      • 10 months

        A game 90% of people can’t play.

Should have left the main narrative alone.

        • 10 months

“i haven’t upgraded my pc since 1990, it’s not fair they released a game on 2002 pc specs!”
          is what you sound like.

Should they not release new games on new consoles too because you only have the old ones?

          • 10 months

Hardly. HL:A is the only game that would interest me in the slightest on VR platforms. No “upgrade” involves buying a dead end platform for one game.

        • 10 months

I’ve heard there are mods to play it on a flat screen. Obvs you’d lose a lot of the experience, but that would be a way to get the story.

        • If possible, I recommend giving Alyx a go, even if you have to borrow a headset, visit a friend, arcade, ect.

Not an option for everyone of course, Alyx aside VR is fun and while the entry requirements are getting lower it’s still a leap.

Valve will probably summarise the main story change in HL3, which will be a very WTF moment that’s kinda on brand with the scenario.

    • That cliffhanger got addressed in Half-Life: Alyx. And replaced with a different cliffhanger.

      • What can I say? I’m a hopeless romatic. Granted it would have to be more than a teaser trailer. But still, I suppose I’m subject to flights of fanciful hope.

  • 10 months

Bring back the Seattle Sonics if we are gonna be hopeful for things from 2 decades ago

  • 10 months

I’ll believe it when it’s out, but that would be the best decision, no one likes waiting 15 years between sequels.
