Quite a few banking apps work on Graphene OS. My bank isn’t listed and it works on Graphene too (I really should contribute to that list). The big downside is probably having to buy a new phone for it but if you need to upgrade anyway it might be worth considering. The only app I’ve run into so far that didn’t just work was the Target app but it works with a bit of tinkering. I’ve only been using Graphene on my phone for two weeks now but all of the apps I used on my old phone are on here and working.
Ever lived in a small town? Drama and gossip is fun. This is the most entertaining thing that’s happened on here for a while.
Also FOSS just kinda attracts big arrogant personalities, we’re taking about people who are so confident and passionate about being to make better software than the corps that they did it for free.

That said, I’m actually considering switching to Proton over this. I think his statements are nowhere as bad as this Mullvad donation and I’m in the slow process of de-Googling and Proton’s other offerings would be a huge step towards that. It probably isn’t great to have email and calender and passwords and cloud storage and VPN all through one company, but it’s better than two with one being Google.

A bunch of these tech CEOs are part of the “Rationalist community” and possibly believe in Roko’s Basilisk which is a thought experiment that an otherwise benevolent AGI would punish anyone who didn’t actively work to bring it about. The rumor I heard around the internet is that the Motorola will have all of the security features Graphene is asking for (and Motorola gets to benefit from both the Graphene nerd sales and the improved security, Google does it in their Pixel line for some reason so there’s got to be perks for Googly Android) and an unlocked bootloader so you can install Graphene, but it won’t be shipped with it.
As a fanboy of LG phones, sadly everything they offer is now better than LG because the last phone LG released was in 2020. At least they shut down their phone division rather than enshittifying.
I have auditory processing issues and this is something that would help me a lot. Not enough to justify the costs - the glasses themselves, the subscription, my own self-respect, the privacy and respect of the people around me…
I think your take is completely reasonable but I think the ‘first to 100 million users’ is actually noteworthy because if they can become entrenched and people become unwilling to learn anything else, they’ve won and can charge nearly whatever the fuck they want (at least in the medium term). See Microsoft and Adobe. They charge whatever they want for their subscription programs because what else are you going to do, use GIMP? Even in situations where the FLOSS alternative is legitimately good, a lot of people will still refuse to switch. I don’t think Anthropic can survive long enough for them to become the only thing Susan from HR knows or is willing to use, but I think there’s a path to profit somewhere here.
I bought a beer fridge a few years ago that was a Peltier device and it came with a wall plug and a car adaptor, they’re still around. It worked but if you left it running for a week or so it would freeze the cans. It was lightweight and did the job and I knew the downsides when I bought it.
Modern Pixels are pushing it on portability but maybe I’m just an old man yelling at clouds. My LG G8 is too big for me to fully use one handed and the Pixel 9a that should be delivered later this week is even bigger and I can’t help but wonder if I just spent a lot of money on a downgrade. I don’t want something bigger in my pocket but that’s what I just bought. D:
Graphene on my Pixel tablet has been petty great though, I’m still a bit worried because the phone needs to be able to actually do phone things.
I daily drive Bazzite and I’m not fully in agreement. If you’re doing non-Steam games or emulation, or desktop stuff, on AMD hardware Bazzite is the winner IMO because it ‘ships’ with that stuff preconfigured in a way steam os doesn’t and Bazzite has something very similar to big picture mode for AMD. Hardware compatibility is probably still better out of the box with Bazzite too.
If you’re only playing Steam games on the TV Steam OS is arguably better.
Something I’ve been wondering for a while is why would someone use a BSD over a Linux distro? There’s some applications that seem more obvious, like I’ve seen diy router builds using some flavor of BSD and there’s server stuff I’m sure that some people prefer over (or are just better than) other options, but people have ported KDE Plasma and a lot of other stuff to it and… Why?
I think as it is now leftism is an intellectual position, but historically I don’t think that’s always been true, when leftist movements saw more broad popular appeal like during labor organizing there were definitely dumb leftists.
The reason it’s in Republicans best interest to keep people stupid is that stupid people are much easier to propagandize to. Analyzing the information you’re receiving helps make you less likely to fall for blatant lies. (Leftists know we need better propaganda, but it’s also deeply cynical to think we need it.)
