How much of the economy in the 60s was telecommunications vs how much of the economy today relies on the internet?

3-5 companies in a sector is an oligopoly, which acts nearly the same as a monopoly. This is not “actual competition”.

All of these companies cornered their own markets, and now they own the backbone of the internet.

If we broke up all of them and required open standards and interoperability then other companies could innovate.

AWS needs to be broken up way more than Ma Bell ever did. We need to have open protocols developed so that there can be actual competition.

The question isn’t “why does Signal use AWS?” It’s to look at the infrastructural requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and ask how it is that we got to a place where there’s no realistic alternative to AWS and the other hyperscalers. 3/

She was misquoted (although the meaning should have been clear). This isn’t just “cloud” and bears no resemblance to a web server you spun up at home. This sort of world spanning tech stack is not something any company can build themselves, and there are only 3 or 4 companies that could host Signal.

The world’s Internet infrastructure basically supports civilization as we know it, and it’s crazy to allow it to be privately owned with so little competition.

In the old days, there would be public standards and interoperability and networks of organizations working together. Now the Internet is a series of proprietary walled gardens.

I think it’s more difficult to identify me from an anonymous account where I don’t even talk about myself that much than from an account under their legal name with a bunch of pictures of themselves.

The thing is that Amazon needs to get broken up way more than Ma Bell did. Most people have never heard of AWS before, but it’s crazy to have one company own so much of the internet, even before you get into their stranglehold on internet commerce (which also should be broken up).

Yes, AI is a tool with horrifying implications. Machine learning has some interesting use cases, but if one had any hope that it would be implemented well, that should be dashed by the way it is run by the weirdest bros imaginable with complete contempt for the concept of consent.

Every couple years I decide to switch to Linux, spend few weeks trying to get everything to work right, then give up and go back to Windows.

I feel like I’m in a “Goldilocks zone” where I’m enough of a power user that doing what I want in Linux takes quite a bit of work to get set up, but not enough of a power user that I enjoy the technical challenge.

Most recently I was trying to play a couple modded video games, and run a headless HTPC. One thing would work on one distro, another would work on another, but I couldn’t get everything to work at once.

The problem is that they realized that they could do both.

I did not at all lose the birth lottery. Being Black is fucking awesome. I just need the rest of y’all to act like you have some sense.
