Also, if every AI company does this, then it’s more books gone. If they cooperated they’d only need to do it once. Good scans of all books in the public domain would be so useful for us all as society.

Small point of order, there was an option to disable it, but it was extremely hidden and buried in the advanced settings area and called “enabling toxic mode”. Also, this only disabled the runtime policy. There was no way for end users to disable the instance list that was in the source code itself.

I don’t know what the difference between foo([0-9]+)? and foo[0-9]* is. Is this just an instance of wonky code or is there actually a reason to prefer the first?

Yeah, that’s my point. The Cybertruck seems heavily inspired by the nostalgia of the Delorean and people forgetting the problems. It’s easy to think that they were considered cool by watching Back to the Future, but they were considered junkers, and that’s even how it’s meant to be viewed by Doc using it.

I wonder if in another ~30 years we’ll get another wave of nostalgia and make the Delorean v3?

Not really. A big problem is the energy usage, which would not go away.

Distributed computing is a real thing though. Check out GIMPS and Folding@home if this interests you. The first is looking for extremely large prime numbers. The second is to learn about proteins. I believe amateurs get more benefit from it. I remember a service to help jailbreak your 3ds used distributed computing. Also there are some folks who search for Minecraft world generation seeds with specific properties using distributed computing.

If you have more specific questions about Codeberg’s decision, you should ask them, not me.

Let’s be real here, the concerns about what the copyright is of code that’s produced by AI is still sort of in the air, especially for a site that wants to host content from across the globe. Codeberg picking its battles and not wanting to deal with that for now seems reasonable.

I can’t see the future, but this all doesn’t sound like an ideological “vibe code is bad, we don’t allow it” but a “the copyright of vibe coded content is unclear across jurisdictions, we don’t allow it.” So I don’t think it’s something they’ll say “hey, this looks vibe coded, deleted.” Many projects self proclaim they’re vibe coded. Many projects list every commit that is vibe coded. It seems likely they’ll go after those projects instead.

But yes, I’m not an oracle, and Codeberg could always heel turn and turn this into a witch hunt, but I don’t think they’ve earned that reputation.
