A language’s packages need to be in lockstep with the language’s version, and they usually depend on each other, too (to a much higher degree than they depend on programs/libraries from other languages, not counting stuff like C that many higher-level languages are built on).
Now explain why tankies seem to be extremely fond of current Russia, even though it makes no attempt to hide its rightwing authoritarian nature. “Geopolitics”/“enemy of my enemy” can only explain so much of that IMO.
Facial recognition, gait recognition etc. (i.e. a different kind of machine learning) is probably more important for surveillance, but LLMs can play a role, too. Websites, unencrypted messengers, email servers etc. have been collecting craptons of text data, but before LLMs it was fairly difficult to analyse all of it if you don’t have a place to start like “user username with IP address xxx.yyy.zzz.pp called the president a butthole on dd/mm/yyyy”. You could always filter for keywords, but people get creative about it, which is substantially harder when LLMs are used for analyzing. So yeah, “nasty data processing tools”, and that’s actually a big issue because of how nicely it slots into the network of mass data collection that companies have been building for targeted advertising (or so they say, to me it was always clear that a lot of them were already using it for more nefarious purposes).
And e.g. I assume that you can identify most people just by their writing style across tens of otherwise unrelated accounts.

Yeah for sure. Facial recognition as used in mass surveillance AFAIK uses very similar machine learning tech you can use quite successfully (AFAIK) to aid diagnostics in medicine, environmental conservationism etc.
LLMs also enables managers and businesses who want to make money with shitty products, which is probably a higher detriment to code quality than the low-level difficulties of programming ever was.
Either way, IMO the prime use of AI, including LLMs, is mass surveillance. And no, that’s not a good thing.
Which paper photo is going to last that long? Keeping personal data for that long requires an unlikely amount of continuous effort.
Depending on the project, development speed is often critical. Lots of data science stuff is really ad hoc and doesn’t get reused much, just some math, biology etc. graduates doing number crunching on specific datasets. Sure the script might take a day to execute, but if it’s only actually getting used a single or double digit number of times, it doesn’t make sense to break out more low level languages.
With commercial projects, it’s often an issue of whether the higher hardware requirements of a project done in a scripting language are offset by the longer development time and higher wages for sufficiently competent programmers to do it in more low-level languages. This does have environment implications, but commercial projects don’t typically give a damn about socialized costs (despite the lip service that many had adopted for a while).
AI seems mental, though, unless Python is just some glue for calling functions or libraries that are implemented in lower-level languages, which is definitely also a thing.

For me, Steam games are so much cheaper than console games that I think that it’s worth it to always pick Steam over console even if Steam turns evil eventually and makes my entire library disappear. I’m also not planning on buying separate gaming hardware, I just add a GPU to my main desktop PC. But who knows, maybe a Steam Machine is actually a better deal the next time I need to upgrade my PC for gaming.
I should probably pick GOG over Steam more often.
AFAIK most water gets used in construction, and constructing city-sized facilities uses a LOT of resources. Now guess which side gets favored if there’s a resource conflict between a datacenter and the local population.
It’s not NIMBY if you don’t want new datacenters elsewhere, either.
Not much of an improvement over the standard design. I already know that the clockhand pointing to 1 means that it’s either 1 am or 13 o’clock/1 pm, but it still doesn’t tell me unambiguously which one it is.
24-hour-clock being a military thing is kind of a USA-thing anyway, in many other countries it’s just normal.
I wish there was a more practical way to have an analog 24-hour-clock, a clockface with 24 numbers is kinda hard to read.
To that end, I want to compare my 'mons stats and see what I need to improve. Back in the day my rationale for team composition was “who looks cool?” without much thought to strategy other than the occasional type advantage for gym battles.
IMO that’s still the best way to pick your team, unless you’re doing PVP. If you’re willing to grind levels to beat the last bosses, at least … I played at least one pokemon game until I had to fight four actually good trainers (varied teams, with the full 6 slots filled) in a row.
TBH that’s pretty much my main issue with Pokemon, most of the fights are piss-easy because the NPC trainers don’t use even the most basic strategies such as “have a full team” and “don’t do single-type teams”. Then (at least with the older titles), the elite 4 come in and kick your ass all the way to next week. I hate it when games are inconsistent like that …
