Who would plan a gas powered data center in a post- Hormuz era?? This is either a boondoggle or the planners are dumber than a sack of hot doorknobs
- RagingRobot@lemmy.worldEnglish2 hours
This is the stupidest way to power computers. Gas powered computers? Wtf lol
- betanumerus@lemmy.caEnglish6 hours
Totally consistent with us being pushed to use MS Copilot. The Chevron types are those that push fossil fuels on us, like they push ICE cars over EVs, and fossil methane over renewables.
- Jason2357@lemmy.caEnglish6 hours
In 2010, I thought, maybe we’d start using electric cars by now. Instead we are using gas powered computers.
Gas powered computers.
That are unreliable and broken.
- betanumerus@lemmy.caEnglish24 minutes
Well individually, we do have choices. My EV, PC and AI do run on renewables. But if you aren’t careful, fossil fuels will creep their way into your daily life.
- RagingRobot@lemmy.worldEnglish2 hours
You have a choice but the system is rigged so you pick the one that the people in charge want. Electric cars are way too expensive and gas is subsidized by the government how is that a fair choice? Also my state charges me a super high tax every year on my electric car as a penalty for not buying gas
- betanumerus@lemmy.caEnglish24 minutes
By “system is rigged”, you mean O&G lobbies to keep those subsidies. Instead of subsidizing climate change, I would vote to subsidize renewables and grid upgrades, and to have the same fee for all cars regardless of propulsion.

FOR WHAT? there are already plenty of DCs we dont NEED MORE STOP BUILDING THEM. SAVE THE FREAKING TREES AND THE ANIMALS. DON"T KILL THE PLANET FFS!

It also fucks over anyone who manages or uses a computer. Each one makes our hardware more expensive.

Microsoft actually doesn’t seem to have enough data center capacity: Microsoft forced to turn to AWS to boost GitHub cloud capacity following AI demand surge
- mushroommunk@lemmy.todayEnglish55 minutes
No, Microsoft has enough, they’ve just slop coded so much bloat in that they choose to not address while piling more and more vibe coding tools on top (which is why they are spinning up more capacity, to feed LLM slop code into).
- mPony@lemmy.worldEnglish9 hours
at the rate they’re building these things, either they’re getting severe kickbacks or someone has the goods on them. I’m not seeing any other justification for building them so insistently.
- Jason2357@lemmy.caEnglish6 hours
Its stock market manipulation.
The second they don’t look like an exponential growth curve, they are over-valued and crash.
- chuckleslord@lemmy.worldEnglish7 hours
Nah, they’re addicted to being first and everyone’s running this race so you gotta race faster than them. They know a collapse is coming, but those only affect poors and the collapse will make subsequent investing much cheaper.
If you’re thinking about consequences, you’re not doing capitalism well enough to be on top anyways.

Americans need to fix their shit. We’re all guilty of fucking up the planet but this escalation is fucking criminal.
- 2 hours
I assume you mean the Americans in charge. The Americans in charge are making loads of money, why would they stop?
The rest of us have zero power. We’re barely surviving at this point. Countless Americans are dying of preventable illnesses and becoming slaves to debt from food, housing and/or medical prices.
So many people have this hilariously incorrect view of what’s going on over here. Maybe stop listening to the people in charge of us, eh? This country is so fucking broken right now.

There’s no climate change. Renewable energy plants are too expensive!
- Corvidae@lemmy.worldEnglish3 hours
How many words do you require? I wrote, “There’s no climate change.” The Trump admin is well known for considering climate change a hoax. However, this story is what I had in mind when I wrote that sentence, I’m pretty sure it was a Lemmy.world link from the same day, although I do get text-based news elsewhere.
I also wrote, “Renewable energy plants are too expensive!” Note the exclamation point"!". I often use it instead of a smiley or a sarcasm mark. Sarcasm doesn’t really apply to a truthful observation, such as “I wish it was sarcasm,” and I’m often in a state of indecision in such cases. But perhaps my posting history would explain better? I’m not sure what 35 square miles of photovoltaics would cost, I seem to recall “billions” of dollars being mentioned. What is the cost of some natural gas turbines in comparison?
Do you suppose if and when Democrats take back power from Republicans, these natural-gas turbines can be legally shut down and renewable-energy plants mandated? Will they be allowed to continue operations instead? Do you suppose that the powers that be will just extract every last barrel of crude they can extract and turn it into CO2?
- Jason2357@lemmy.caEnglish6 hours
Poster is a Corvid, not a Parrot. Sarcasm for sure! They are smartiepants.
