  • This is the cop vs firefighter superhero discussion.

Batman is a cop. The very DNA of the character is almost entirely about fighting crime. His origin starts with a violent crime. Sure he’ll save people (the end of the last movie he saves people from a flood) but mostly he’s working on crime.

Superman works best as a firefighter. He’s rescuing people, controlling and mitigating damage, etc… His origin story is a global catastrophe. He will get into fights, but mostly in service of mitigating damage. He will stop crime, but mostly in service of safety. His main villain isn’t a guy who can fight him (generally speaking).

Most characters and stories have a bit of each.

From a screenwriting perspective, an antagonist can provide escalation and give a voice to the challenges the protagonist faces. It’s just a very good tool. A Batman movie where he’s just getting people out of a burning building (for example) might work, but it would feel off somehow.

  • From a user perspective I don’t understand how wasting a bunch of screen space on an ugly, non-functional bar across every window is better. I get that from a software development perspective it’s basically one less thing to deal with. But I absolutely prefer to have a functional use for the space.

The title bars in KDE felt so antiquated, especially for such a foundational thing. For a while I removed the title bars and used a “move window” key and minimize/maximize/close shortcuts.

Eventually I just switched to Gnome.

  • Flirting can mean a lot of different things and it can be taken differently by different parties, it’s going to be tough for anyone here to diagnose it beyond the fact that you don’t seem to feel comfortable with it. That’s what’s important.

    For future reference:

If you find out something about your partner/relationship that doesn’t comport with your original understanding, and you’re not OK with it, you need to re-evaluate the whole relationship.

Whether that’s infidelity, lifestyle changes, identity changes, secrets, lies, values, kinks, etc… You need to either leave or figure out some ground rules you can both live with.

    Best of luck.

  • I can’t speak for anyone else but I can tell you what I personally love about Gnome.

I like that it’s Spartan. I like that it looks good without me having to customize a thousand different settings.

I like that It has client side decorations, so every window doesn’t have to have an obscene, chunky, mostly useless title bar.

I don’t miss every single application having 100 different options packed into a menu bar. Once you get used to it, you realize that it was mostly getting in the way the whole time.

It’s just a really streamlined workflow for 98% of what you do. The problem is that 2% where it’s too spartan and God do you wish you had some options.

But I also think KDE is a great desktop environment. If I were more of a gamer I’d be using KDE. I think XFCE is an excellent desktop environment for aging hardware and Windows converts. It is very much a matter of taste, Use cases, and your preferred workflow.
