These are just frankly necessary if you live far enough north. When I’m going to sleep at 11pm ish, the sun is still up lmao.

I’m not op, but I’m 55° north… It’s 22:25 here and this is how light it is right now. In another 4 hours, it’ll be nearly full daylight again!

51° N. I’m also on the fourth floor of a building, so the horizon is farther away. I’m exaggerating a little bit. By “still up” I really mean it’s still bright enough out, twilighty, that it would affect my ability to sleep. Bedroom window also faces
eastwest, so, yeah it’s a combination of factors but still.- 11 months
It would matter more for your ability to fall asleep at night if your bedroom faces West. Do you mean it affects your ability to sleep in late?

I’m 61°N, the sun barely sets in the summer. Today, sun rises at 3:51, sets at 23:14. It’s proper dark for maybe 2 hours

This is the real answer haha, its very difficult to do it right to keep proper opsec but easy enough ocne you do it once but the legit markets for them have people with business-like conduct and its all very confidence inspiring with reviews and stealth packaging and everything.
I knew someone who died in high school because he got hunted down basically for selling or buying drugs or something to people in person, can only recommend fully private anonymous ways of doing illegal things.
Not to mention your money goes farther because its not as far down the supply chain.

Noise canceling headphones. Yes, they exist for under $100, maybe not the best, but they’re a godsend.

Must be your ear shape since Airpods Pros are the only earbuds that fall out of my ears.

Eyeing a rice cooker, it’s really not a need-to-have but I might go for it… Edit: went for it and got one from my local asia market. :)

Pro tip, you can also cook oatmeal and beans in it and it’s better then any other way.

You won’t regret it. They’re such a nice thing to have and there are totally decent ones for pretty cheap.

I use an instant pot and it works really well. I use it for other things too but honestly rice is probably what it gets used for the most.
- 11 months
I have an instant pot as well, and used that for rice too. But it is nice to be able to have beans in the instant pot and rice in the rice cooker at the same time.
- 11 months
I love mine. Get a cheap analogue one that works with a magnet. Perfect rice every time

Yup, for rice cookers, the cheaper the better. Anything with a gasket ain’t worth the cleaning effort

I have better results with my instant pot than any of the results I’ve gotten from the zojirushi. Plus the zojirushi takes 4-5 times as long.
- 11 months
My wife forbids me from getting any large appliances for any 1 thing, so I could never convince her to get a ride cooker. Instead we got an InstaPot that we use exclusively to cook rice. It’s way different (trust me)
- 11 months
There’s a “fast” option on most zojirushis. it should take about 1 hour if you select that. Source: I’m Asian
- 11 months
My mom dislikes instant pot rice and likes zojirushi rice. IDK what the difference is but she can tell. Shrug.
- 11 months
There’s definitely nuance to how you do it in the instant pot, depending on what kind of rice it is. Zojirushi is a little more hands-off, and fool-proof. I just never decide 2 hours in advance that I want rice with dinner.

Not for defense. You can carry a knife like when you also carry food because you can justify needing it. You can’t carry a knife without such reason
- Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish11 months
Not anymore. All knives are now banned in public because apparently we are toddlers. Or they think that terrorists won’t find any way to hurt people now. Because surely legality is where any knife murderer draws the line…
Edit : I think laguioles and swiss army knives are still ok since they have no blade lock. But apparently there is now zero legal difference between my extrema ratio knife (which is admittedly really blurring the line between EDC and “tactical” knife) and an Opinel.

A leatherman, or gerber multitool has been a life-saver for me more than once
- barneypiccolo@lemm.eeEnglish11 months
Leatherman tools tend to be extremely expensive. Amazon has a lot of multitool options for far less. I have the one made by Wetools, which used to be about $20, which was a serious bargain, considering how well it was made. Now they are around $35, probably due to tariffs, but they are still a bargain.
- 11 months
I dont mind the expense on quality tools, well made, that last literally forever. Ive had ones that are about 20 years old now.
Few things I learned from my father, never get cheap tools
- barneypiccolo@lemm.eeEnglish11 months
I get that, but Leatherman tools aren’t expensive because of their quality, which is excellent, they are expensive because of their brand. There are plenty of equally high quality tools that aren’t nearly as expensive. The Wetools knife that I have is a good example. Excellent design and high quality construction for a fraction of the cost.
I appreciate high quality in all things, but I have also learned in life that quality and cost often have little or no correlation. With a little research, I can usually find a tool, or guitar, or audio gear, etc. that is just as good, or even better, than the well-known gourmet brands, at a far cheaper price. Multitools are an excellent example of that.
- rabber@lemmy.caEnglish11 months

I have a Boker Kwaiken, a real nice one, but man do I love the DW-1. It’s so wee you can really use it anywhere without worrying about freaking anyone out and it does things like box cutting waaaay better than a longer knife.
- lolcatnip@reddthat.comEnglish11 months
My EDC is a Spyderco Para 3, but IMHO Kershaw is a great budget brand. I really like the Iridium, but the finish is a bit too delicate for my taste because I keep my knife in the same pocket with my keys.
