Very fashionable, imo, this basic design seems to be a staple of uh… europunk/euroalt? I’m not really sure what the genre or scene names would be, but I’ve seen this kind of design in many ‘sexy lady with gas mask’ style videos, lol.
I’m guessing its because the kind of ‘noodle nose’ thing is evocative of the stereotypical ‘Plauge Doctor’ mask.
You can always just layer over the eyepieces with translucent plastic or even just carefully layered and fixed, colored saran wrap, lol.
And there are many other slightly different but generally design-element-similar masks.
Ahahaha thank you, I actually own several GP-5s, along with quite a few M65s, a bunch of half-face 3M respirators and a miscellaneous assortment of other masks. The silver-lensed one that’s my favorite is actually an MSA SCBA mask, not a proper gas mask (Fire-fighting surplus, damn things are like $600 new). I do love the classic look of the GP5s but they stretch out so fast and aren’t otherwise adjustable (and theres the whole fucking GOST vs. NATO 40MM thread thing that makes accessories a huge pain in the ass to fit), it’s a real shame.
I was really just hoping you knew of a like… idk, formal-dress gas mask? I’ve been wanting to pick up one of the chinese clones of the Israeli Model 4 masks that have been coming out, just haven’t pulled the trigger on one yet. IDK if you have recommendations I’m genuinely interested, I have a -huge- heavy rubber collection (which I uh… seem to have never posted any of my latex? I should really fix that…)
(Incidental, but they make colored self-adhesive window tint for putting on your car! That’s the best thing I’ve found for lenses - it’s what I’m using on the one in most of my photos, and it comes in all kinds of colors)

M3s are like the uh… the 90s US ones, like the ones the soldiers in Half Life 1 have, right? Bigger, non circular eyepieces? Or is that the M65?
Whereas the Half Life 2 masks are generally more based on the GOST format, just without the ‘cheeks’, kind of?
And it does make sense that that one you often wear is actually not a military oriented mask… I’m not quite sure why, maybe its just cheaper to mass produce less transparent, hardcore plastic, maybe its to be able to retain some abililty to get a scoped/sighted weapon up to just one eye… but yeah, I can’t say I’m familiar with a military mask that has like a mono-faceplate.
(Well, beyond like, a bomb defusal squad mask, or pilot masks/helmets, but im fairly confident those aren’t gas masks. so i guess no military infantry gas masks are monocular/monofaceplate?)
That israeli clone of a chinese upgraded clone/vatiant of roughly a gp5 seems legit to me! Though I’ve never actually worn a gasmask, so I don’t know dick at a practical level about actual fit and stretch and mounting/attach harness types and such, which would obviously be quite important.

Yeah, the HL1 masks were probably based on the M3 - them polygons make it hard to tell tho…
IIRC the masks the Combine wear in HL2 were based off the soviet ShMS masks, if those were the ones you were referring to!
I can’t say I’m familiar with a military mask that has like a mono-faceplate.
It’s kinda convoluted, but military gasmasks (as in, things designed to protect from chemical weapons) are pretty much a singularly defensive thing - you’re never going to send infantry into a big cloud of Sarin or VX, you’d just send CBRN vehicles (or more realistically just blow the whole thing to shit with artillery, it’s not like you’d need to worry about civilian casualties…) - and as a result military gas masks are only kept around in case of an emergency. And so the priority isn’t “Can operate with a full field of view while wearing it”, it’s “Make sure the Jarheads don’t leave it behind because it’s too fucking heavy”.
Big clear faceplates, while they give you excellent visibility and are great for shooting through, are terrible at “being stuffed into a backpack”. They’re just too bulky. There’s of course exceptions (the cold war got WILD with designs)
but this is why riot police wear things like this:
because they’re pretty much the only example where people go towards big clouds of chemical weapons, and they have the luxury of knowing that they’re going to be used so they don’t have to lug the damn things around in a backpack thus can use the bulkier-but-more-comfortable-and-ergonomic masks.
The mask I really want is an (MCU-2/P | MSA Advantage 1000 | MSA millennium), which imho are the coolest looking masks ever produced AND an exception to the above rule about mono-plate military masks - though as far as I’m aware they were never issued to combat infantry and were primarily fire-escape or emergency equipment for the military.

I really recommend an M65 - I pass them out whenever shit goes down around here and they’re fucking fantastic against teargas, and the lenses are impact-rated so they won’t pop out if you get clocked with a baton round (which btw: ouch). Can’t have a beard (true of all gas masks) and you ABSOLUTELY MUST fit them before you need them - they are truly, godawfully, horrible to adjust (I recommend a chopstick and patience - it’ll come loose eventually, I swear).
They’re by no means the sexiest, but for practical purposes they cannot be beat.
