    I found some interesting papers on this subject a few years back.

    Statistically humans have the highest rate of fecundity with 3rd-4th cousins. Close enough to ensure genetic compatibility, far enough away to avoid deletetious recessive alleles popping up.

    This makes sense when you think about the small groups that most humans have traditionally lived in.
