Because of the nature of federation posts and comments on LemmyNSFW communities will live on basically forever. However the photos and videos will likely be lost. Some were links to external media and will stick around, some may be cached. But most photos and videos that were uploaded directly to the instance will break when the server fully goes down.

For example: [NSFW, OBVIOUSLY] [email protected] - that link should load fine on your instance. It should look functional just with no new posts. (Note: it’s actually possible to post and comment in these communities still, but only people in your instance will see it)

The images are served from links like these: (mild NSFW) https://lemmynsfw.com/pictrs/image/d50379d3-7d64-440c-bcf6-13dbf2b81c1b.webp?format=webp

The fact that the images still load is a somewhat hopeful sign. The server is still running, Lemmy just crashed. There’s still time for the head admin to come back, the data still exists. This seems unlikely though as the other admin says they haven’t heard from them since October.

So there’s a small window to archive this stuff, if you’re interested. Between now and whenever the media server crashes or gets shut off for non-payment.

I still have hundreds of communities from lemmynsfw in my blocklist from before instance based blocking was implemented. Pretty sure lemmynsfw is 95% responsible for that feature needing to be implemented.

Some people like your typical boobies and such, but sometimes an obscure, highly specific community will get a huge boost of activity by one enthusiastic uploader and the main Lemmy front page will be swamped with posts from c/amputeesPeeingOnFabrigeEggs or something

True, see my other comment about filtering.

Also, it’s Fabergé eggs. Fabrige must be the knock-off Chinese version.

Look, it’s an expensive hobby. Don’t judge me for using knockoffs. Or do. That’s also one of my kinks.

One may want to have adult conversations without seen porn. A NSFW filter is quite blunt.

They are. NSFW filters often also filter out stuff like the ICE shootings, for example.

One of PieFed’s earliest features was the separate distinction between NSFW and NSFL / gore. Although with Lemmy lacking that, I would guess that any poster would be afraid to rely on it without also toggling the NSFW label as well.

          Adult conversation equals not NSFW.

However I do agree that the available filtering is quite lacking. Tons of topics fall under NSFW, and disabling the filter brings the usual Russian Roulette of “will it be a titty or a beheaded guy or a 60yo bloke getting fisted?”.

I’ve actually brought this up before, the Fediverse in general needs more granular NSFW sub-categories. Like, I have (or now with lemmynsfw being down, I guess, I had) a separate account for porn only. I’ve disabled NSFW filtering, but that doesn’t mean I wanna see gore, rape, murder, animals being gutted, gruesome accident photos, cartel and ISIS execution videos and so on, I just don’t want titties blurred in my main feed.

NSFW does not equal exclusively porn.

I’m not looking to block out gore or triggering topics, particularly news stories such as what’s come out of Portland Minnesota lately. Hell some of my own posts are NSFW, but I’ve never posted porn.

Disabling/blocking all NSFW entirely is not an acceptable solution when it’s only porn I’m trying to not be flooded with.

At its peak, before instance blocking was a thing: 4/5 posts under the ‘All’ feed were porn. I posted a picture quite a while back (I’m not gonna go dig it out, but it’s in my comment history), from before we could block an instance, with just a massive list of communities in my block list almost entirely from lemmynsfw. It was way over the top.

Now I can just block an instance or community that dedicates itself to porn and all is well. I still don’t think that content belongs on a platform like this. If people want porn, they can go to the MANY sites that serve porn; it shouldn’t be combined with your daily scrolling through news, current events, and funny cat videos*. But we have tools to work around it; so, moving on.

        * heavily paraphrasing for general everyday content that an average person may share with friends/family.

Edit: I have no idea why I said Portland… I meant Minnesota, referring to Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Because the same kind of gestapo shit is happening there, with the only difference being that (as far as we know) no white citizens have been blatantly murdered yet.

That’s fair; I don’t mean to minimize or dismiss the situation in either location, just that Minnesota was what specifically was on my mind when I wrote the comment.

I disagree with porn having no place on the Fediverse. A lot of amateur creators started their work on sites like Reddit, and the platform becoming unviable will push them to alternatives like Lemmy.

However I do agree that there should be some gateways to get to that point. Filtering instances/subcommunities that are marked directly as all-NSFW is a good first step (and should’ve been part of the protocol from day 1).

I also see why the default “filter out all NSFW content” filter is problematic (even though it is enforced by app stores on every mobile platform, sadly). A much better approach is to filter subcommunities and instances that are marked as entirely NSFW. That way e.g. news subcommunities can still post NSFW articles that have a wider reach, without anyone’s primary feed getting slammed with porn and gore.

Perhaps there can be a place for it, I just mean it should not be an automatically and consistently part of peoples feeds. Creators should have a place for it that’s easy to find/access for those that want/seek it. Just don’t shove it in people’s faces without their explicit prior consent.

I don’t think the general/greater population of lemmy came here to find porn…
