Doesn’t look great…
From the trailer the gameplay seems fine, although I don’t get why they are remaking 64 again (again), and the graphics look decent, albeit generic. I kinda hate the character redesigns and voices. The “more cutscenes” doesn’t really feel like a selling point to me and I’m a bit worried about it.
- Cyv_@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish6 hours
Most of the graphical changes seem… fine I guess. The characters faceplant right into the weird hyperrealistic uncanny valley tho.
I’m not sure them mentioning more dialogue and cutscenes makes me particularly excited. Seeing what they’ve changed and added in the trailer doesn’t inspire confidence, it feels like those joke AAA gaming tutorial things where they state the obvious in a hyper positive cheesy voice and maybe I’m just picky because its different, but here we are.
The multiplayer looks sort of neat, too bad I’d have to buy a switch 2, pay for Nintendo online, and suffer on Nintendo’s shitty servers to use it.
I’ll probably just stick to the recomp. My favorite part of the game is the gameplay, and that looks completely unchanged.

On one hand I’m glad they didn’t go with the overdone cutesy Disney style for the animals, but yeah Fox especially looks off in the kinda realistic style. He looks more like Fantastic Mr. Fox now.

I have wanted a new Starfox game for so long. I wanted to be excited about this, but why are they remaking it AGAIN?!? 4 of the 7 Starfox games are the same fucking game! When people said they wanted a new Starfox game they meant they wanted a NEW Starfox game. If they wanted to do just a visual upgrade they could have just tweaked Zero and released it on Switch. I mean hell at least that game had new content. The franchise has so much potential and its so frustrating to see Nintendo be completely unable to innovate on this series. Fucking Konami managed to do a decent job for fucks sake. This is the only franchise of theirs that they are just completely incapable of creating something new for and its honestly baffling.

1 hourThey should fuse it with that ground RPG and make their own co-op No Man’s Sky.

Meh. I had the original Starfox 64 VHS promo cassette that hyped the game and rumble pak. The game got bumped as my birthday gift request by GoldenEye 007, but I eventually bought the game in its chunky cardboard box; Rumble Pak and all.
I thoroughly enjoyed the N64 game and had more exposure to that one than the original SNES title, but I think I’ll wait for either PC emulation or I cave and buy a Switch 2. The former is more likely at the moment.
It looks nice, but it’s no “killer app.”

Ugh, it’s Star Fox 64. I loved it as a kid because it was new and cutting edge and hey rumble pack… but the tone of the SNES original, the music, the character art, they were better than Star Fox 64’s in retrospect.
On top of that, they tried to make Fox look like a realistic fox with that goofy cartoon pattern and mohawk, and it’s just not working for me. The mohawk never worked for me and now it looks even sillier.
It’s a good thing I already laid Nintendo to rest in my heart or seeing this might have hurt a little.

A game that amounts to a graphically enhanced N64 game shouldn’t cost $50.
Edit: Buying games at inflated prices emboldens Nintendo to raise them further; if this were a new game they’d be pricing it at $70 or $80.

I’d take an updated version of the original Starfox that ran at a decent framerate.
- brsrklf@jlai.luEnglish2 hours
For some reason they didn’t even push the direct/announcement to EU switches. For a game that releases in less than 2 months.
That said, hard to be excited for another Star Fox 64 remake, no matter how many animated cutscenes we get.
EDIT : they finally sent it. Even their comm around this feels like an afterthought.

Cool I guess. Nintendo doesn’t seem to know what to do with the franchise. They’ve remade SF64 twice now.
Am I the only one bothered by the fact Fox’s ears stick out of his helmet? I certainly wouldn’t wear headgear that left the most fragile and sticky-outy parts of my head exposed.

33 minutesAlso SF64 is basically a remake of the SNES game with some new mechanics from the scrapped SF2 game. And this Switch version is the third remake of SF64. Zero is a reimagining of SF64.
- early_riser@lemmy.worldEnglish12 minutes
I think a lot of that is due to the genre of the game. I’m not sure what you can innovate with a rail shooter. There’s a video that argues exactly this. Can’t find it right now unfortunately but it talks about Star Fox as well as Katamari and Banjo Kazooie, basically great games that exhausted their entire premise after two installments, leaving nowhere else to go but down.

10 hoursYeah, I know. When seeing this post, I thought it was about the HarbourMasters PC port, which I’d rather play than this because at least the PC port isn’t $70.

Did anyone even play the 64 game? My friends and i didnt, but we absolutely destroyed the first game.
Might also be a generational thing.

Absolutely! It seems to have a lot more staying power judging by how often its referenced.

I was 8 when SF64 came out. It was the coolest game my friends and I had seen to that point.
- crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish8 hours
I mean, the 64 game is memed to death for good reason. I remember playing the hell out of it when I was a kid, my son used to fall asleep to Let’s Plays, and now he and I play it on Virtual Console together.

4 player battle arena was amazing, I had one friend who was annoyingly good with the tank and would routinely annihilate us with it, to the point where it was briefly banned in SF64 multiplayer in our group. Same friend showed me how to save Falco in the first mission, effectively unlocking the other half of the game for me. Fun, incredibly quotable campaign. I don’t have the same sentimental attachment to it that I do for, say, the Legend of Zelda games, but I do have a lot of fun memories associated with it.

9 hoursI was a part of the N64 generation, we played the hell out of it. I recall my one college roommate getting really hooked to it after I brought my N64 to our apartment too.

My neighbor comes over and we jam out on retro games. I learned that the generation after mine were super into Diddy Kong Racing on the N64. My friends and i were too old for that game, we were waverace and oo7 addicts.
- TachyonTele@piefed.socialEnglish8 hours
We’ve demolished Diddy Kong Racing in the past couple of months. I have to say it’s one of the best racers of its time.
The amount of unlockable races, characters with actual different stats, boss races, time trials, an extra world, multiple vehicles, open world, four tiers of in race items, unlockable characters, and an entire second quest… It’s a damn fine game that ive personally grown to love more than the tech demo that was Wave Race 64.

Ugly Sonic lookin “This will be graphics in 2013” lookin character designs.
Nintendo: We cant make a new FZero because we dont know how to make it fresh.
Also Nintendo:
Look, the music was fine. Gameplay looked fine I guess. Mouse aim added obviously in response to decompilation projects. Graphics were mixed bag, sometimes they looked good and sometimes they looked like the lava on Solar. Arwing designs are way too busy. Multiplayer looks cool and actually interesting, but gameshare over the internet with gamechat is an abomination they shouldnt have even showed. Seeing that 5fps feed for 3 screens was painful.
Definitely not a system seller.
If the rumored Ocarina of Time remake looks like his, I really hope they cancel it immediately.
