So my username on reddit was u/IAmUser1234567 I had 17k+ Karma, i didn’t do anything they just banned my account. Now i guess they have created a digital fingerprint or marked my ip address, because if i create a new account it gets banned almost instantly.

I am loving lemmy(using Voyager on my android phone) so much. Reddit anyways now just contains shity cringe content, it is becoming like insta, I am happy to join lemmy family :)

Reddit is just too botted out to be a reasonable place for a conversation anymore.

There’s two back and forths before someone gets angry and everyone has a personal anecdote that contradicts any point anyone makes.

  • From what I could observe, getting an account banned bans the IP, and trying to log in on a banned IP bans the given account, making for what feels like a “plandemic”, or at least a very poorly thought or overzealous anti-ban circumvention feature.

Still, if the platform doesn’t want you, no need to think twice, I guess, so welcome aboard!

And about Instagram, there’s Pixelfed which tries to be an alternative to it, if you’d be interested to explore around. There’s also generally fediverse-compatible alternatives to most of the major services out there. Also Mbin and Friendica are very overarching if you’d wish to try them out too, having some degree of compatibility to most other types of posts from the fediverse (PieFed’s also working on that though it may need some maturing).

  • Not saying don’t use Lemmy, but check out piefed and mbin, both similar but different platforms to reach this corner of the fediverse. They all interact with each other, and have their own pros/cons. (I’m responding to you from piefed, for e.g.)

Welcome to the fediverse! We have options and don’t lock you in, and the karma doesn’t matter!

I didn’t really understand the differences so I coin-flipped and landed on Lemmy.

  • 3 hours

Don’t expect everyone to congratulate you on leaving a bad platform when you only left because they finally kicked you out (but mistreated everyone for years).

  • I’m shadow banned 12/24 on my old high karma years old account for posting how to make DIY Luigi Mangione prayer candles on witches vs patriarchy

  • i didn’t do anything they just banned my account

I have seen people who got banned on lemmy who deserved it say this (there are most likely a lot of cases on reddit where people were banned for a bad reason, but saying that you didnt do anything doesnt mean much)

Isnt karma meaningless? I have gotten more from a single bad joke on a popular community

Isnt ip banning a common way to get around people using alt accounts?

      • 46 minutes

the terms “jail the” plus identity triggered the ban. I’m not surprised.

Your ban seems like one of two things:

        • The person or bot didn’t understand you were being sarcastic (hell, even I’m not 100% sure)

        • The person or bot didn’t receive (or bother to check) the context, which hints at the above

Sarcastically stating something is a dangerous game, and you got burnt.

I got banned from a sub, didn’t know, year later commented on that popular front page sub from an alt, every account I have was instantly perma banned with no appeal. (Just a bot that auto responds no)

    • I think my account was banned, but don’t know for sure. I left during the API bullshit.

Definitely didn’t do anything against the rules.

    • I made fun of AI. Bot banned me. Def banned with IP cuz using a VPN on a backup device was fine. However, I figure if they’re that petty to ban, then fuck them! I had 150k+ karma over 10 years. Sad to lose the maker communities, and tech swaps, but whatever. Fucking BS.

  • My 15 year old was automod banned reddit-wide for saying “GME” on r/wallstreetbets once.

I commented on a post about the Trump administration censoring historical information that they considered ‘woke’ on government websites with - “Double Plus Good.” Anyone with a brain in their head knows this is a reference to George Orwell’s seminal anti-totalitarian novel 1984. But I got banned for it. I assumed it was an automatic bot ban just based on a bunch of user downvotes from idiots who thought that I was in support of censorship, so I appealed, which is supposed to be reviewed by a human. But they kept the ban in place.

And the bans make no sense!! I got a site-wide seven day ban for the George Orwell 1984 double-plus-good reference. But before that I posted in some gay men’s subreddit I followed in response to a young guy who was saying he got the icks when an old dude friend of the family was being flirty with him as some family function. I said that if he was upset with the old man flirting with him then I was thinking perhaps I shouldn’t have buttfucked my 13 yr old nephew at his bar mitzvah. For that drunken comment I only got a warning that I could be subject to a three day ban from that particular subreddit.

  • They mark your ip, email & leave some cookies/other fingerprinting behind, buy if you restart your router, use a disposable email & use a different browser for sign up, you can get around it.

I got a site ban for ironically supporting using pagers to kill and maim kids in an irony sub, which is extra ironic given people openly supported Israel doing so in major subreddits, but I don’t think the bots the use to moderate understand irony.

No, they understand. They’re working as intended.

Right-wing dickheads can appeal and a person will overturn their ban. A left-wing dickhead can appeal and the AI will cite the rules and walk away.

Rules protect them from us, not us from them.

  • I got banned from reddit and came over to lemmy fully after saying “Peter Thiel should be turned into soup” three times

    • 50 minutes

It’s even easier to move now that you need an account to even read old reddit.

I would have thought that since they’re providing a different view to Google as most users, they should be kicked off Google too, but they haven’t been

I heard that if you do it in front of a mirror, you’ll see a vision of his blood boy from beyond the grave.

    • I said I hope he likes hanging out on balconies (like the boyfriend he had killed did), instant ban

  • I got banned for saying, “If you see a Nazi, punch a Nazi”, as a play on “If you see something, say something”.

    I had over 950K karma on a 9-year-old account.

I still read a couple of subs there, but I won’t care if they start requiring an account to read. I can leave them behind.

      • 47 minutes

I got banned from the entire site for reporting a “kill all men” post for misandry.

If you do something an admin doesn’t like, they ban you.

      • I got permanently banned from the entire site for saying I wanted Karoline Leavitt gone. Someone said her nose is now to small for her face after plastic surgery. And i replied she should just follow her small nose and be gone.

        • 6 hours

Yeah, I’ve had two bans, a three-day and a seven-day, for “calls for violence.” In my opinion, that term is very loosely applied. That being said, site wide permabans for first infractions aren’t a thing.

OP saying “I didn’t do anything” is bullshit too and doesn’t help anyone. Just say what you did, it probably doesn’t warrant the ban, but not being truthful about it is pointless.

          • Quite right, I got permabanned for something very innocuous after lots of three-day bans for quite strident support for targeted violence against the rich, ie Luigi type stuff.

I think the actual ban was from me pointing out that the people murdered on Bondi Beach were there at a religious event which, while attended by lots of perfectly innocent Jewish people for fine reasons, was organised and funded by a right-wing Zionist group that is quite controversial.

I also made sure to say that it did not excuse the actions of the two killers at all.

It would be like shooting up a Catholic church during the Christmas Mass.

The Roman Catholic Church is responsible for immeasurable pain and suffering throughout history and recently, but most of the people at mass are just there for Christmas stuff; they didn’t run the church.

I appealed the ban, they upheld it, I came here.

      • I got a perma ban from the whole site for literally saying the words “thatsthejoke.jpeg” on a thread about a tongue in cheek DYI cat tree that was made to look like the twin towers.

Someone was upset because in the video they’re attaching a small plane to the top of one tower for a cat swat toy. In the video they call it “a little birdie for the cat to play with” and the comment i replied to was upset saying it was clearly an airplane. I simply replied “thatsthejoke.jpeg”.

The next morning I was perma banned from Reddit.

  • Welcome in!

Advice I always share to new users is that you have a lot of power in who and what you can ban. For instance, you can ban:

    • Another user

    • A community (basically like a Discord channel)

    • An instance (basically like a Discord server)

People have said that Lemmy is heavily political and technological in content nature, so feel free to block those communities if you want to have a calmer experience. Doing so will probably remove a large chunk of content from your feed though.

I use Sync for Lemmy, and there’s a feed on my homepage for “Everything”. If you can figure out how to set that filter for Voyager, then you’ll see posts from every away instance & communities that YOUR home instance & communities are federated to. If instances aren’t federated, you won’t see their content.

    Have a blast!!

Welcome! You picked a great instance. Also consider piefed.zip, the piefed instance run by the same admin.
