PieFed let you follow/block keywords, but that’s not the same as robust, community-wide topic blocking. Imagine collaborative, booru-style tagging across posts so blocking a tag reliably removes all content using it.

This would require a fediverse platform that has a built-in, accurate tagging system. So no under that basis.

I feel like many people who went to Bluesky were desperate for it to work and grow, rather than necessarily believing it would work and grow and in some cases - weren’t even people who the Twitter style even appealed to. They just went there to try and do a bit of damage to Twitter. This is likely why its now slowly losing activity.

I signed up to Bluesky not too long after it surged. And I made a few comments, but quickly just… didn’t have anything say. It’s just a “shout into the ether” site like Twitter - but smaller, and no nazis. That’s a good thing in itself, but in an ideal world I would never really use it.

Well this instance has already been heavily defederated.

It’s an instance that says “safe from the madness and censorship of the fediverse”. The opening pitch is them being combative.

People don’t want to federate with MAGA-themed instances.

Maga.place is already defederated by a bunch of instances.

Pushing people aware from the Fediverse over crippling posting standards does nothing whatsoever for the wider negative impacts of social media.

I mean to be fair, a user could simply make accounts across the hundreds of tiny forgotten fediverse servers that exist and upvote and downvote from there, skewing results.

Well, sure, that would stop that - but I don’t see what benefit this gives the fediverse really. You would actually be giving small privately hosted instances enormous voting power across the fediverse, so grants opportunity for manipulation in its own right.

That means that most /all/ content on every single fediverse instance will be hugely biased in favour of local content.

If viable either financially or logistically, this is just overly excessive and pushes people away from the Fediverse.

How is this feasible?

Something to be considered down-the-line when Piefed is the dominant site in the Fediverse given current Lemmy development. Otherwise all this has the impact of is suppressing Piefed posts on Piefed.

But if this is toggled at an instance level, a lot of instances will turn it off.

Lets be clear, any Section 230 discussion will never mention the Fediverse. That implies anyone who wants to erode even knows what the Fediverse is.

What’s interesting to me here regarding this, is Reddits current preparation timescale. This isn’t going to be enforced until March 31st, 2026. This tells me that Reddit would have been unprepared for a complete mass-walkout of community moderators during the 2023 Reddit API strikes. A large chunk of Reddit during that period was genuinely inaccessible. But after a few token gestures and a few examples made of some especially rebellious mod-teams, most of the striking moderators returned.

A huge opportunity was missed by people running major communities to functionally degrade Reddit in at least the medium-term as a website. You can’t just hastily promote random people to replace moderators Reddit is either forced to remove or who leave voluntarily. The average person is likely too lazy, too arbitrary and too corrupt to effectively oversee communities of notable sizes.
