  • I mean isn’t that at least some extent technically true to a level.

I mean if we weren’t talking a shitty corporation to begin with. If this were say, a 20 year old mcdonnalds worker pirating game of thrones.

IMO the bigger concept is still rather than if they got it… defining whether using that data after the fact is legal. I mean hypothetically speaking lets just say they bought 1 copy of each of the millions of books, or bought used copies, or say had a machine that could scan every book in a library. IMO the issue shouldn’t be whether or not anyone managed to download the books in their pure form afterwards. The focus should be the AI trained on their books, is going to be distributing portions of their book to millions of people, and any potential profits of such will be going to meta and uncredited to the original authors. The idea that meta’s involvement in torrenting may have let little timmy get a copy of his text book 15 seconds faster… shouldn’t be the driving force here.

  • I mean question if you are meaning at work, or in your personal twitter etc…

That being said free speech is about being able to say what you want… but not about forcing others to be around said speech. IE I don’t know your political views, don’t really feel like digging through the post history because it doesn’t matter.

Conceptually though, if say I worked with a racist for instance. he spent the day talking about how mexicans are taking our jobs etc… that would make the workplace very uncomfortable… and as I need to be at work to survive, I would hope my workplace would have an HR person willing to put an end to that. I got no problem if someone else believes that shit, or if he goes home and posts on twitter and other media sources…

  • I would say lemmy is in one of the better positions of the fediverse, as far as being useful.

IE IMO the facebook/instagram equivelents you need an insane critical mass to get anywhere, because simply put, in a crowd of 100k in the globe, you probably don’t have your friends/family… IE the people you use those apps to see.

Mastadon… a little bit better as you are looking for general stuff, but still the main drive of twixxer is reading on celebs, noteworthy figures etc…

Lemmy… well sure in 100k people you’ll absolutely find some with interesting discussion on politics, gaming, plenty of memes and cat pictures etc… Obviously without a real huge constant growth we won’t be the ideal place to discuss super niche topics (least ones that aren’t only discussed by a handful of geeks). So barring either super narrowly focused migrations, or major exedus’s lemmy will probably lag behind reddit when it comes to say discussing specific games/movies, but will continue to have great content in the overall gaming/movie/meme topics.

  • Which I agree with… IE I like the system of “your camera catches a hit and run”, you can go knock on their door, ask them to share the footage with you… and you give it to your lawyer, cops or insurance adjusters as you see fit.

What people like me don’t like is the idea that the cops decide to search your permission, use your footage to prosecute a crime you wouldn’t want to. Imagine the same scenerio… except instead of a hit and run… lets say it was say someone delivering pot… or a hispanic person just going home for the day, and ICE was looking for someone to bother, etc…

Point is we’re all happy to be witnesses to crimes that hurt people. but we also know you give cops too much power… and you’ll find horrible things happening

  • That’s exactly me as well. Tried it, looked at random people’s cats and dogs. Not for me.

I think that’s kind of the challange we’ve got with regards to making social media from a nerds perspective. We’re a bunch of nerds that don’t understand the appeal of the things we want to make alternatives to, and wouldn’t be interested in using them even if they weren’t run by horrible evil tech corporations.
