I think if you are paying to have a worse experience with a ICE car, and someone points out you can get a nice electric car for free and you think they are just being an annoying asshole- that’s an issue right there.
Sure, some people need dump trucks for work. If you don’t though I think switching to an EV is sensible.
I miss LineageOS so much, my last couple of phones haven’t had a build of it and my asshole banking apps wont work on it now.
For my next phone i’m just not going to buy one unless it’s already supported and if I have to skip online banking I’ll do it.

Cool, I’ll check it out. I’m not a dev so I mainly use GitHub to download and install other peoples work. It’s nice to know that there is a decent alternative for people who need it.
If you are going to compete with AAA games it’s going to require a big budget, which not all Devs have access to.
A high quality AA game would probably do great, but would be unlikely to outsell a AAA with hundreds of millions of dollars for budget.
Obsidian made a fantastic game with Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire but it was considered a ‘failure’ sales wise (at least at launch), despite being well received.
Obsidian sold to Micro$oft despite making very high quality games and their crowdfunding campaigns consistently earning more money than they were asking for. The stated reason was they found it hard to keep their employees paid consistently and they didn’t want to lay people off. Also that they thought they could do just as good as other big players in the industry if they had access to larger budgets.
I think it was a bad move. They managed to survive the massive round of 9,000 jobs cuts to Microsoft’s gaming division (this time), but you just know that Microsoft would cut them in a heartbeat if they thought it would save them a dime in the future. That being said I think it’s understandable to want to see your employees paid, and it’s just a sad fact that AAA games require huge budgets nowadays, so I can kind of understand why they sold, even if I don’t agree with it.

It would just require smaller teams making lower budget games that are more focused on Art than sales, which I would be really happy about honestly. Too many people are in this industry solely to rake in the big bucks.
Yeah, GitHub really hurts. Hopefully people will start to use SourceForge and similar alternatives once they realize that Microsoft isn’t just trying to monopolize Operating Systems and Gaming Studios, but the whole damn Internet as well.
Ditched Windows permanently 11 months ago for Pop-OS and couldn’t be happier. I’ve been a big Linux fan for years, but would always dual boot for gaming purposes.
I’m so glad that isn’t necessary any longer. Almost feels cheating, being Microsoft free with Zero downsides and plenty of benefits.
You may already know, but a lot of times when a game isn’t listed as ‘playable’ it just means that particular game hasn’t been tested yet and will likely still work just fine*, unless it requires kernel level anti cheat ofc
Just so happens I’m boycotting that as well. If I wanted you to do shady shit to my OS, I’d have stayed on Windows.
Edit: *Check the games not listed as playable on protondb and see what that says. Since it’s a ‘crowdsourced’ platform, it’s often more up to date than Valve is.

Sure, that doesn’t leave a lot of games I can buy, but hey, Indie games are often the best games. Also I have a backlog so huge there will probably be peace in the middle east before I’m thorough with it.

To get pedantic for a second. The title of this post is “Microsoft gives…” as if this was an altruistic act that Microsoft decided to do for some people, when the article states they did it to comply with a law.
A much better title would have been “EU Forces Microsoft to Give Users More Control:” It returns the credit to the people who deserve the credit and clarifies that it wasn’t something Microsoft did willingly.
I’m more surprised that a city in Germany didn’t switch to Linux a decade or more ago.

I just looked it up and people are saying you can install the Ubuntu PPA with no issues.
It may not be (probably isn’t) the latest release, but that option exists at least. I’m glad I never had to use it. What games have you had to use it for? Do you have an AMD GPU or Nvidia?
I just wanted people to know that not everyone thinks Pop-os is shit. Part of the issues you experienced may have been due to the fact that they are currently hard at work writing their own DE (Cosmic) using Rust and they are waiting on that to be finished before upgrading to the newest LTS release of Ubuntu. We are currently still on 22.04.
If you want all of your software packages to be on the bleeding edge, I wouldn’t recommend PopOs. But I definitely would recommend it for someone who just wants a solid distro and doesn’t ‘have a computer science degree’.
YMMV, but from my personal experience using it for almost a year now it’s been rock solid.
Edit: I just realized that my post said “Don’t use gamescope” when what I meant to say was “I don’t use Gamescope.” I wasn’t intending on advising people not to use it. My bad.
Edit2: I also forgot that I stopped using “Pop!_Shop” for updates and software search. That was getting really slow. I would advise your partner install the “COSMIC Store” instead, it’s way better :)
I’m on PopOS and my experience is the exact opposite. I love the UI- it’s the main thing I like about it actually. Never had an update fail.
I don’t use gamescope, just run everything from Steam or Heroic and never had an issue gaming.

Even if your audio or WiFi card doesn’t work automatically in the live environment, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are out of luck either. My WiFi card manufacturer doesn’t support Linux (Last thing I buy from them), but I was able to find a driver that was built by the community for a very similar product that works flawlessly.
This may be more complex than some people are willing/able to solve, just wanted to put that out there for people who can so they aren’t discouraged by a bad experience with a live distro.
