Yes, but I would point out that:

a) a bunch of those commercially supported Foss projects still started out as a personal project of one of a small handful of programmers that then got popular and exploded.

b) more importantly yes, a lot of commercially useful FOSS is developed by paid developers working at tech companies as part of their line of work, stuff like browsers, languages, frameworks, packages, etc. but a lot of the most iconic and beloved consumer facing FOSS applications are not, as at that point if theyre non exploitative then there’s no reason for a corporation to support or build on them. Corporations prefer to support Foss infrastructure that’s so general they can still use it to build closed exploitative projects.

One aspect of FOSS that most people don’t appreciate is how it’s funded. Like how it’s actually funded.

Once you put a dollar value to the hours put into it, it fairly quickly becomes apparent that most FOSS projects are basically only possible because super rich software engineers (relative to the average person) have the relative luxury to be able to dedicate a ton of free time and effort to building something they think should exist.

It’s why there was a huge FOSS boom after the dot com crash when a ton of software engineers suddenly got laid off but were relatively wealthy enough to not have massive pressure to immediately start grinding a 9-5 again.

It’s a very easy change to default ‘Auto expand media’ to true for half of new users, and see what effect it has over a few months. It’s also a fun experiment with no real drawbacks.

Writing the code to do that is very easy, determining what metrics are actually important and impact user success and what metrics accurately track user success is much harder.

I do generally agree though! Personally I just asked the instance admins of lemmy.ca to redirect lemmy.ca/r/... URLs to lemmy.ca/c/... URLs (rather than 404ing), as a tiny user facing feature for Redditors coming over, and they did it in a second.

It’s not that popular of a concept on here, probably since there’s massive selection bias (everyone here evidently found a way to struggle through), but you’re completely right and I find that that lazer focus on usability is one place that Open Source advocates and projects often struggle with.

And personally, I think it’s because most open source projects are built and run by programmers since they’re the ones who can build an open source project, whereas a consumer facing site like Reddit / FB / TikTok/ IG, would be planned out and designed by a product manager, working closely with a designer and market researcher, and then get programmers to build that for them.

It’s a model that’s really difficult to pull off though in a community primarily consisting of programmers volunteering their free time, but I think it’s worth keeping that in mind. Open Source projects that are consumer facing (and especially ones that rely on network effects), really need to work hard to stay in that user facing headspace.

IIRC the Apple Vision’s RDP is limited to a single remote monitor, at least it certainly was at launch and from googling around it seems like that’s still the case which is just absurd.

You have the power to place an infinite amount of windows anywhere in 3D space but Apple only lets you place a single monitor somewhere.

Compare that to the $500 Quest 3 which supports triple monitors OOTB (on Windows or MacOS) and has third party apps that can upgrade that to whatever your headset / PC can handle.

But for either headset to be an actually true, all day, monitor replacement, they need to get a lot smaller and lighter. They’re simply too hot and heavy for 8 + hours usage right now.

I always thought the entire point of them releasing this was not to make crazy money, but see how to improve upon what they built by having everyone beta test it for them. They really didn’t have much info on how to make VR successful since none of them are really big. Sure, there’s a market, but they want to know what it will take to get everyone on board not just the enthusiasts. Personally, I think it’s going to take more than just an app to get there.

No, they don’t need those apps, they literally just need one app, a well working remote desktop one.

They will never be a workstation because you will never get the amount of power you can get into your desktop, into your ski goggles. They could however, function as a perfectly good wireless monitor solution for an existing desktop. Strip out some of the processing power, make them smaller, lighter, and more comfortable, like the big screen beyond, and then tailor MacOS and iOS to use them as remote displays that let you put windows anywhere and you have your killer app: monitor replacements.

Man, it’s so wild how little we know about biology and how much we as a society spend on absolute, utter, bullshit, instead of figuring out how just the basics of us work.

I know it was never possible before modern computers, labs, and equipment, but we really should have like 1000x the amount of basic biological research going on that we do.
