Today’s game is Quake. Specifically QBJ3. I saw someone talking about this and decided I’d give it a try. I’d never played Quake before this. But I saw someone talking about the modpack and thought it was pretty so I tried it. I even bought a copy of Quake 1 for it.
I really like the modpack. It’s got some some amazing artistry too it, maybe jumping headfirst into it for an evening of fun wasn’t the best idea though. I think I’d appreciate it more if I’d actually played Quake 1 before.

I played 1 map where you’re escaping from prison which was a load of fun. It went on a while though so I stopped and tried a different level.

Next I tried one called “Penis day at the Gym”. I have no clue what the hell I played but it was fun. I got a laugh out of me slipping on a banana peel to my death. I also found something called a Brutalist Butt Plug.

The final one I played I can’t remember the name of but it had something to do with a house. Design wise it reminds me of Silent Cartographer in Halo CE. I think it’s my favorite to play. It had a lot of wide openness the others didn’t.
I do think that openness works against it though too, as it maid it harder to hit targets. That ended up causing me to stop as I was fighting a group of enemies I just couldn’t get past.

I really liked this modpack, ultimately though I think it was more so a fun evening for me to mess around. When I decide to set my mind to it though I’d love to come back for an evening and finish a bunch of the levels.

As a player of quake, nothing here looks at all familiar. No exaggeration. Looks far closer to half life than quake imo… does look kinda cool though.
The video I was shown was showing off “how old the engine is yet it still looks great”, much more of a “Let’s see how far we can push this thing” experiment. It’s really cool to see. I recommend trying it
Thanks for this comment and your post. It does seem very cool. I haven’t used the engine they recommend and I’m wondering what new features it has that makes it required to not have issues. I’ll try to check it out this weekend.
I definitely recommend trying out the original quake. And try to think of it from the perspective of 1995 when it came out, when doom and duke nukem 3d were the closest games made before then. The graphics and overall atmosphere of that game were incredible. I actually think it mostly still holds up honestly.
Is the rerelease worth playing or should I put in work to play the OG one? I don’t know if it’s like a Halo anniversary situation or not
The rerelease on steam is probably the right route. You meant that one right? It is basically just like the original but with some minor and welcome improvements. I would suggest turning off the accessibility features though, unless you need them.
Yeah, that’s the one i meant. I’ll have to undo the mod to play it once i get to it. I ended up putting it on my Backlog
Totally!
By thumbnails I would have guessed moded Q2 engine (idTech2, so kinda HL1)
Then again Q1 & Q2 have been rereleased in the recent years (with Doom 3 like lighting & modern Doom-like extra campaigns … I’m just playing these extra maps now bcs I’m less weirded out by what they did or maybe bcs I’ve forgotten about it for a few years).
I’m still glad Quake 1 got so many amazing mods throughout the years (eg of HL1 I only remember They Hunger for some reason).
This is running in an older source engine, not q1
I remember hearing about They Hunger. I mean to try it out but never got around to it
Honestly, they prob are still hungering, perpetually hungry bunch of folk iirc (but I don’t remember much, my brainhole prob romanticised the atmosphere too much, also just the thought of fans making such total conversion mods … I never judged them harshly to begin with).
As some one who played it for years (and unreal) I didn’t recognize it either. Looks cool, not my quake :D
