Is this about hiding the downvote count, or the downvote button?
On my solo instance I disabled downvoting. Reason for this was not long before setting up the instance, I read an article how downvoting stimulates some negative mental effects. Since then, there may have been one or two posts or comments that I actually wanted to downvote, but it’s been a while. If a post or comment rubs me the wrong way, I just move on now.
Still glad I did, couldn’t go back to an instance with downvotes.
Good question. I’ll check that. While I don’t have a problem with the concept of a down vote, I feel like it negates discussion. I’d rather have someone express their opinion if they have a problem with my comments, rather than mindlessly slap a down vote on it.
IRL not all communication is verbal. Regardless of any idealised notion of online discussion boards there will always be people trying to push some bullshit that doesn’t deserve anything but a contemptuous down vote. Sometimes you just have to scowl at fuckwits and walk away because you reasonably suspect that: a) the under lying motivation for their reasoning is entirely sectarian; b)they didn’t arrive at their opinion by their own reasoning; c)you can’t easily unpick a lifetime of racist/sexist propaganda in one chat. etc etc.

yes, that’s the only option left if one really wants to protest a post :D
