Ironically, this will end up as a upgrade to Meta Quest owners, as they no longer will have that bullshit shoved all over the “Home” ambient.

11 hoursThey published an update article.
Meta is backtracking on its plans to shut down the VR version of its metaverse. The company now plans to support Horizon Worlds in VR for the “foreseeable future,” though users shouldn’t expect new games, CTO Andrew Bosworth said in an update.

24 hoursOh my God it’s finally fucking over. I can use a Quest headset again without being inaudatited with ads essentially from Horizon Worlds. I can use the headset again without having to constantly hack it.

inaudatited
What is this word? Like I know the one you were after, but I am so curious how messed it up so bad.

Good. Now can we call that cancerous corporation Facebook again?

1 dayThe best comment on this I’ve seen…
It turns out, to the horror of techbros like Zuck, that the actual core demographics for VR worlds are not edgy cyberpunk antiheroes whose coolness could rub off on them, but femboy otaku who want to go drinking with friends while dressed as fabulous anime girls without even having leave their home and trans furries who want to party at visually spectacular virtual raves then pirate movies and have virtual cuddle piles.
Which… isn’t very monetizable for normies.
…yet. 😈

Because meta wasn’t good for it, hence why it wasn’t popular at all.

1 dayWhat a comical waste of $80 Billion. Coulda bought two Twitters with that money instead and still come out on top.

$80bn for VR Miis that didn’t have legs until last year
$80bn for “We have VRChat at home”

I cannot fathom how $80billion was spent without anyone skimming off the top…and the middle…and the bottom.

I’m entirely convinced the whole thing was invented to scam Meta. So congrats to all the people who got paid along the way!

Yes, it was suckerberg.

they developed arguably good headsets and then sold them at a loss

Meanwhile, OpenAI claims their losses will get near $80 billion before they start turning a profit. You’ve got to spend money to make money. Or to fail spectacularly. However the saying goes.

Actually anyone can post using the API, and many people did. Lots of the heavily publicized posts were written by humans

I tried Horizons once. Confused TF out of me what its purpose was other than to have random people screaming into mics and yelling n**** at you all the time.
It was not a fun experience and I never saw the point. I play VR games for VR experiences with actual fun in them.
- andallthat@lemmy.worldEnglish15 hours
The picture in the article clearly shows a virtual lady trying to kick a guy’s virtual balls. I think that says all one needs to know about the experience.

Hi, I’m an AI engineer based in Japan, and I’m expanding into the U.S. market to work with more long-term clients. I’m looking for an American collaborator who can act as a communication bridge between me and U.S. clients.
I will handle the technical side myself, including project planning, AI development, and software implementation. Your role would be to join meetings, help with smooth communication, and support the client relationship side.
If this sounds like a good fit, please send me a message.

1 dayTbh I always thought it was unreleased and still being developed. My shock when I found out it was available and no one used it.
Came off like VRChat for idiots.

They tried REALLY hard to get us to use it for meetings when I worked there, but nobody wanted to give up their legs ¯\(ツ)/¯
- eleijeep@piefed.socialEnglish16 hours
If you don’t have legs then how can you go pantsless in a video call? Checkmate Zuck!
- 1 day
Nah, they just told us to use our own if we had them. And of course, we couldn’t get a discount on them or anything, either.

1 dayReading the article, Horizon Worlds is not shutting down, just the VR access. Apparently they’ve moved it to apps you access on iPhone and Android. I see the appeal even less; that seems like Second Life mobile.
- 1 day
I loaded up my vr headset the other day for the first time in… A year? Maybe more.
And I was surprised to find my own custom decorated room was gone and instead I had a balcony to that Horizon place.
I could see little people running and jumping around and some portals or doorways and other stuff. Is that what they are shutting down?
So what happens to VR headsets’ “home screen”?
Does it go back to the way it was?- 12 hours
And people running and jumping is just a pre-made animation. Not even real people
- Shindo66@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
That is what they are shutting down. It was just a way to try to advertise stuff.

I can’t wait for the day that I’m forced to switch from a discontinued Meta to a homebrewed OS that supports my library.

1 dayDoes this mean I don’t have to see the hideous Meta Horizon avatar of myself I never asked for anymore? They should let me use my VRChat one in the home environment instead.
- 1 day
Was this the thing with legless avatars from the uncanny valley? No idea how they wasted so much money - they’d have done better to employ a good gaming studio to make something fun that looked good. Could have saved billions there.
- 1 day
The company shared that it would go “all-in” on the mobile version of the platform in February.
TIL there’s a non-VR version of Horizon. wasn’t the whole point that it was VR? what’s even left if you take out the VR, just voice chat?
