46 minutesAutomation games like Factorio, Satisfactory, etc. I have tried. Everyone makes them seem like the most addictive form of digital crack there is. I just can’t get into them. They feel too much like work to me. Please tell me where the fun is that I am clearly missing

47 minutesNot a fan of FPS. I have played my fair share of them when I was a teenager since it’s all my friends would play, but today I simply can’t stand any of them anymore

I can understand basically any game’s audience because I can understand three things: masochism, operand conditioning, and social pressure. Souls games are just an absurd level of self flagellation. Grind games are just a process of rewarding a behaviour over longer and longer times to trick you into thinking you are doing something fun when you get to the release point. Social pressure takes individual tastes and grinds them away because if you want to have friends they will naturally congregate in cheap friendslop games because shit’s expensive and tastes vary, but any gamer crew can afford $7 a piece to have something mediocre to complain about together.
- RedAggroBest@lemmy.worldEnglish19 minutes
Any time I see someone referring to souls likes as self-flagellation or something else along those lines, I gotta wonder: have you ever overcome something difficult? The satisfaction it gives most people should make it easy to understand without just going “you must love to torture yourself”.
The fact that you can find tons of souls players who are constantly complaining about unfun, bullshit bosses (cough Bed of Chaos or Micolash cough) just shows that’s we aren’t all just in it for the punishment.

I was gonna say golf without considering what local universe this is.

2 hoursAnything competative or stupidly difficult like soulslikes.
Life is stressful enough already; games are for having fun and I don’t find stress very fun.- solarvector@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish19 minutes
I tried Wukong, got through the first chapter and then some. You can tell it’s a good game. I enjoyed the mechanics, the story, everything well put together. I wanted to have fun. I just never really did. Also any sense of accomplishment was pretty much just a sense of relief after beating a boss.
Herbal Gamer@sh.itjust.worksEnglish
15 minutesOh yeah I tried that and totally got the same vibe. I got my ass kicked by the first wolf boss before looking up how to beat him. Then I got to the next area where there were a lot more strong enemies and I was like “nah, I’m out.”

Challenges are nice sometimes. Too easy gets boring fast. Dunkey Said it Best: you want the fine line between babymode and fuck you Player, the one that challenges and pushes you

2 hoursOld RPGs.
They shouldn’t be popular, they should be wildly popular.
- jacksilver@lemmy.worldEnglish17 minutes
Back when I could only afford a game every once in a while oldschool rpgs were great. They took forever and some had decent replayability (like pokemon or classes in FF). Nowadays they just feel like a slog.
- Canaconda@lemmy.caEnglish2 hours
I love old RPGs but they’re too grindy for me now or something.
Like I bought the Final Fantasy Tactics remake. Original is easily my favorite game of all time. And a HUGE Quality of Life improvement the remake added was the ability to fast forward the gameplay and the cutscenes (IYKYK).
Every time I try to pick up my 2nd all time favorite FF6(Snes) I find myself losing interest after my 10th random encounter. I like the story, the characters, the music(!), the puzzles/exploration. Defs not bored of the game, haven’t beaten it (again) for like 15 years now.
But the gameplay itself, sadly, just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Like I burned many hours on my gameboy colour playing Dragon Warrior. Can still hear the music for Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger in my head. So it’s not like I never liked the genre.

As a D&D grognard since 1980 I’m baffled by why people think they have to keep upgrading to the newest version of everything, complaining about what’s wrong with it, and depending on a company to fix it. There are other ways to make choices in life besides clicking on menu options.
- godsammitdam@lemmy.zipEnglish4 hours
Any gacha game.
I’ve tried to play them, but many play themselves and are loaded with microtransactions and you’ll hit a wall. I much prefer unlocking things from progressing or doing skillful things within the game.
- Nightsoul@lemmy.worldEnglish3 hours
Saaaame. I have friends say, “but the story is amazing” but the game play is just boring most the time. Spam same 4 abilities, watch pretty colors fly and either steam roll over the enemies or get stuck because you don’t have the right gear because you get unlucky with the gatcha rolls
RebekahWSD@lemmy.worldEnglish
3 hoursI play them sometimes because they’re free (to start). I then suck all enjoyment out of them, and the second I’m tempted to spend money I throw it in the trash and find a new one. There’s so many!
- godsammitdam@lemmy.zipEnglish3 hours
I guess I’m just oldschool haha. I prefer MMO gameplay, which is very similar, but you can get gear and titles and mounts for clearing difficult content with friends (or have an opportunity to make new ones.)
Runescape deciding to allow you to toggle cosmetics on or off for everyone is an amazing design decision that should be used more often. Because then, the gear tells a story. I miss that in older mmos. You’d see a glowy weapon or cool cape and be inspired to go ger it and/or see the amount of dedication it took for someone to unlock something.
Aint no billionaires there, they’re allergic to working hard after all haha

Maaan, easy: soulslike. Combat so slow, they’re the closest real-time combat will get to turn-based. Everything moves at a snail’s pace in most of those games, holy shit.
If I want difficulty, I’ll just play Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden or something, it does not need to be slow and boring AF.
- flameleaf@lemmy.worldEnglish3 hours
Are there any soulslikes that take place underwater or with moon gravity? I think you might be onto something with that description
- jacksilver@lemmy.worldEnglish15 minutes
Another Crab’s Treasure - Its actually a pretty fast paced and fun souls like.
- Siethron@lemmy.worldEnglish4 hours
Most super mainstream games especially ones that are loosely based on reality in the modern era GTA, COD for example. I’m not saying these are bad as games, but they are so RIDICULOUSLY popular and I do not see the appeal.
- HubertManne@piefed.socialEnglish3 hours
I get that I like certain things and other people like others. Currently im not looking for a challenge in games im just looking to play with dolls.
- Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.mlEnglish7 hours
I have a strong preference for co-operative games, so I don’t really understand the attraction of non-team based PvP games like battle royales, extraction shooters, or just straight death matches like in quake or CoD. Like why would you want to be cold and alone with everyone out to get you when you could have friends.
wirelesswire@lemmy.zipEnglish
4 hoursNot my cup of tea either, but a lot of people are competitive and like to pit themselves against others. There’s also the aspect of competing against others with friends. The only times I’ve had fun in pvp games/modes was when I was playing with a group of people I knew.

Thinking about it you’re sort of right, in that I enjoy playing stuff like Smash Bros and Mario Kart with my friends, but even then I have no interest in competing, I just find ways to annoy everyone else. I might win as a side effect of being annoying, but I’m just asking likely to be hoisted by my own petard, and I consider both good results.
- Psionicsickness@reddthat.comEnglish5 hours
Feel the same way but I never have friends. I KNOW GTFO is the best game ever if there was 3 more of me.

Have you ever enjoyed any game that’s mostly played one on one like rock paper scissors, tennis, poker, chess, go, cup stacking, most sports you see in the olympics. In one on one PvP games, you usually make friends too
- Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.mlEnglish5 hours
Not really, I always preferred stuff that involved a group. The closest I get is board and card games, but they have an element of randomness that takes away the individual competition and makes it more of a social activity.
- spiffmeister@aussie.zoneEnglish5 hours
Deep rock galactic, tried playing with friends a few times and holy shit I would rather watch grass grow. I have never played a game that made me disassociate to that extent.
Also the endless repetition of a few extremely unfunny lines by the fans reminds of Rick and Morty fans.

Rock and stone!
I can see how that can get boring real quick but to me having a rock and stone button on my keyboard is an amazing feature

For real. The game is pretty boring on anything under hazard 3.
