The pope’s AI encyclical was good reading and reminds us to center human dignity, compassion, etc. Lots of ethics to explore with regard to AI and related cultural phenomena.

So when my priest raped me and the church protected him, that was an example of the ethical views and compassion and respect for human dignity you’re talking about?
I guess I always have more to learn from this amazing institution, like how I’m an abomination for being queer.

PS. This thread can easily spin on another reiteration of the arguments around “separating the art from the artist”. That text on AI may have a certain sympathy to some… I haven’t read it. After this post, I thought “maybe I should?”. Thanks to your comment I got centered back in my perspective: “nah. the pope can say whatever he wants to. I won’t be his supporter nor audience.”

But he also recently approved a new treatise on human dignity that lists “gender theory” and gender-affirming surgeries — which many, though not all, trans people undergo — among the “grave violations of human dignity in our time,” placing them alongside sexual abuse, human trafficking, poverty and abortion.

I know that they were “dealing with it internally”, and they did seem to be taking some measures, but I would be very surprised if it is completely eliminated, especially since their methods and actions are private. Hell, the whole response could have been faked since nobody really knows what all was done.

I think the leadership is less socially conservative compared to the past, but they represent some very conservative bases so they more or less are having to crawl progress forward or they risk a schism.

Federal lands are lands in the United States owned and managed by the federal government.
The federal government manages about 640 million acres (2.6 million km2) of land in the United States…
I’d also guess that the Russian and Canadian governments are up there.
