• It’s the only MMO I’ve ever played through the full story of and maxed out more than one character in because it was just fun to play and explore. It’s one of the best the genre has to offer, and the community is a joy.

    • Highly suggest it. No need to rush into purchase. Try out the base game, explore, enjoy it. Endgame all classes can do basically everything, so finding one that clicks for you is more important than wanting to play “a healer” or etc. Unless you are trying to do the ultra sweaty Legendary Challenge Mode raid bosses you can complete everything using mostly whatever so meta isn’t a big deal. (Maybe high end fractal CMs and PvP/WvW things matter a bit idk.)

If you’re into story, there is a LOT behind the living season stuff, which was free if you played while it released but otherwise I think they bundle it all (and pretty sure like EVERYTHING is on sale, its $50 for the 1st 3 expacs and the living story stuff on their site, I think thats $5 cheaper than on steam.)

Do note: If you buy on steam, you’ve gotta buy all the stuff through steam. If you buy through arenanet’s website, you can’t purchase upgrade through steam. (If you’re on linux/steamdeck you can download and run it through steam with a startup command to use anet’s launcher to sign in normally if you go through anet instead of steam so either way it works.)

When GW2 came out, lots of GW1 fans didnt really connect with it.

Hope we GW2 fans are not gonna feel the same about GW3.

But even if GW3 was not made for GW2 audience, we are still getting another one.

Both current GW games are different and good.

I played GW1 as a young kid and then was very much into GW2 for a long time. It’s probably the game I spent easily the most time of my life with. The past few years I dropped it because I felt like the quality dropped and also they focused on the wrong stuff (for me). But it still is a nice game and I like to look into it from time to time.

I’ve been waiting for GW3 for some time actually, the promise of the story has me hyped a bit, but yeah, the action-based combat puts me off a bit. We’ll have to see.

But in a 2nd video they released yesterday, they told people that they will continue to support and develop for all 3 games going forward. So people who like GW2, but not GW3 are eventually saved :D

I didn’t play GW1 but I tried GW2 and I couldn’t connect with it either. I played a ton of FFXI back in the day and a bit of WoW too but GW2 just didn’t pull me in.

  • GW1 hands down is one of the most creative online RPGs

GW2 has nothing of what made guildwars fun for me

hopefully GW3 is a mix of both ? open world MMO with the skills system of GW1

    • 9 hours

Same. I loved GW1, have been there when it launched and when GW2 was released. I actually played GW2 for a year of two. Then I stopped. Tried getting back, but felt too far behind everyone else to enjoy it.

I still fondly remember wandering the pre-searing Ascalon and trying to explore every last bit of it.

  • 1 day

Would be nice if they can make a good mmo. Feels like the genre has died off.

    • I was thinking about this other day. I genuinely think it’s because of how we interact with the genre that has largely killed it. Everything is min maxed to no end and almost everything is essentially a chore to meet that goal. The genre use to be fun to just play around in and be social but it has really lost its touch. I’d be so happy to see a revitalization in the space.

      • I mean, gw2 kinda sounds like what you want? Like it’s pretty chill, no need to continuously grind, hit max level and that’s it. Anything new added is account progression, and even then most of it isn’t important outside of that expansion’s story or to get better rewards from the maps for that expac or etc, save for a few masteries needed for a few specific raid encounters, and some that get double introduced (like mounts that are introduced in one expac and featured heavily in another) give a bonus if you have both which is cool but not necessary. Like 14 years of content so there is plenty to do, and today they said they’re commited to 15 more years, and while they’re pausing the next expansion for gw3 to get released, they are going back to base game to fix up a lot of stuff to make it better (and even adding physics based rendering)

It’s a game I can stop playing for months, come back and keep enjoying without needing to learn something new (unless a balance patch really fucked you up) or unlock new stuff or get new gear just to be able to play.

Plus WvW (bigass siege style PvP) is a pretty cool game mode and they’re developing a new map for that finally which can be a pretty chill PvP mode.

I guess my point is also why I am stoked for GW3, Anet has learned a lot and I don’t think I could be bothered to play an MMO not made by them at this point.

  • Several thousand hours in gw2. Really liked it.

I hope they keep the stuff I liked. Solo friendly but other people are around to casually join up or whatever. No level grinding. No gear grind.

    • 2 days

Truly that the core, if you look stuck or having an hard time, passing people often help.

      • GW1 and 2 are the only MMOs that don’t give me social anxiety, one of the best gaming communities there is.

  • Of course arenanet are in the best position to make a new mmo, I can’t wait. Gw2 made me get into illustration.

    • I can see why. The loading/travel screen art blew me away on release and still does now.

I don’t often get my hopes up for new games any more, but I kinda have for this.

  • 23 hours

Eh, if they bring back some of what made the original GW feel special I might check it out, but if it’s just gw2 version 2 I’m not really all that interested.

    • 8 hours

It will probably be quite different from both GW1 and GW2, since they’re planning to continue active development of all three games, so they wouldn’t want to target the exact same audiences.

GW3 seems like it will have a more console-friendly action-adventure combat, and dynamic movement that preserves momentum between movement types.

    • As someone who played gw2 but never got into gw1, what exactly made it special? With reforged I’ve decided to finally get around to it and I played for maybe an hour so haven’t really been able to get to builds or heroes or etc yet so curious what people loved about it so much that isn’t in gw2.

      • 15 hours

Well this is all just my opinion and probably mostly driven by nostalgia, but gw1 to me feels like the story is more about you/your character, and your friends(as opposed to the world). Sure gw2 has instanced content, but it feels more like a traditional MMO than gw1 does. There’s nothing particularly wrong with that, but literally all of the mission and quest content in og guild wars is instanced, so it feels more like a single player RPG that you can play with friends and less like an mmo unless you are in a town where you can party up and trade with other players. It really captured a feeling of being out in the wild by yourself and didn’t have the same feeling that I get playing every other MMO where you just feel like your going down a beaten path, even if you technically were doing something that literally everyone else was doing. Some games like PoE do have a similar system but they do not do their storytelling or combat in quite the same way.

There’s a bit more to it than that though, the art style, the combat mechanics, and the tone of the story all changed quite dramatically between the games. Gw1 has a less exaggerated, more grimy and down to earth artstyle compared to the more “paintbrush” artstyle of gw2 and gw2 also feels like the overall tone is more lighthearted and gw1 wasn’t afraid to just strait up off npcs that you grew to know well in order to advance the story and up the stakes.

Playing gw2 for the first time as a long time gw1 player was a strange experience, because it felt like Anet had abandoned many of the things that made guild wars unique and different compared to standard mmos, and it honestly felt like they took the stock mmo formula, applied a vaguely guild wars artstyle to it and removed healer classes.

To be clear I’m not saying gw2 is a bad game, just that it’s very different from og guild wars. I would not be surprised if gw3 is significantly different than gw2 and 1.

        • It’s kinda funny, what stuck out to me in gw2 was that it was an MMO where (at launch) the story wasn’t just about you. There was an entire army (I mean duh it’s an MMO) and while you were the commander and thus still important, there were still things happening that you didn’t see. People dying in the war, even if you try and help, and overall just felt refreshing. Well I guess most people hated that so it ended up going a different direction after that but, I really enjoyed it.

I get liking the 4 player instanced content stuff, I loved PSO and others with a similar setup I just wouldn’t really call that an MMO, but they’re good games too. GW2 is much more social, and stuck out to me as an MMO where you don’t hate to run into people for once. No fighting over mob kill credit, no waiting in queue to kill a unique for a quest, no rushing to get a resource node before someone, etc. so even if it wasn’t all instanced, it was good to see other players, and they were more often than not extremely helpful.

It’s for sure a very different game than gw1, and I’m sure it will be different than gw3 as they plan to keep supporting and releasing content for all 3.

Also, if you didn’t see, they recently did a pretty big update to gw1 to make it more modern, and releasing on mobile later this month (you can sign in to same old gw1 account to play on mobile) and they did just say in their video post yesterday that they are adding a new type of content to it soon.

  • I hope the combat has stronger identity in this one. Really love GW2 but the combat felt very flimsy and each identity seems like tried to be different from usual rpg roles and never had a solid identity that felt as good as classic roles.

    • 1 day

I’ll probably get blow back but I was never a fan of the combat. I’d prefer tank heal dps. I love literally everything else about the game except the combat.

      • Come a long way since launch (which like technically could’ve had those builds but no real need since dungeons didn’t have much use for them cuz 5 DPS just blew stuff up before you die) and now raids and fractals have use for roles for either DPS or boon support which comes in DPS, heals, and tank flavors. Every class can do pretty much every role now, which I find nice to be able to find something that clicks with you and not have to switch off that class.

Some classes still have niches, it’s not all mush or anything, but it’s nice.

      • 1 day

There’s tank/support/dps in GW2 for sure, but pretty much every class can build for any role and it’s only relevant in raids.

My Mesmer (a mage with the lowest health and lightest armor) is my best and toughest tank in my character line up.

  • I’ve never really played any GW games, but a honest to goodness new MMO from a experienced studio is exciting! For so long the genre have been awash with kickstarter scams like Ashes of Creation or multiple Ultimas, it’s encouraging to have some hope.

  • 2 days

I look forward to playing 5 years after release once ANET has changed their mind about core design choices a few times, fluctuated between unique classes and homogenization, and exhaust their thesaurus to be different than other MMOs. I know that sounds sarcastic, but I really do like GW2. I actually have it open on the other monitor right now- I’m in Mistlock smelting mithril ingots. I’m not sure why ANET has such a difficult time sticking to design choices, but eventually it seems to work out.

  • I’m cautiously optimistic about this one. I loved GW2, even though I haven’t kept up with it in a while, so I’m interested to see what they are planning for the sequel. Orr also seems like a fun setting. I live the descriptions in GW2 of Orr pre-sinking. (Also, the gods (presumably) saying “we promise you magic” is funny, considering how horribly that ends in this case.)

However, GW2 is dripping in style, and I love the painterly style it has. I’m not seeing that same style in this trailer. It looks kinda generic, tbh. (The design of the mount is stellar, though.)

Also, being set in the past means that the Sylvari don’t exist yet, and the Charr are still the “great enemy”, so those two are out. We seem to have gained Kodan as a playable race, though (probably means no Norn as well, since they would have quite a bit of overlap). Also, this seemed like the perfect chance to give the people the Tengu they have wanted, but playable Tengu remains a dream, it seems.

    • I’m hyped for this for the most part. But you pointed out what I felt but couldn’t put my finger on: the visual style does look kinda generic in the trailer. I hope that they evolve this into a more unique or stylized style.

  • I’m excited for this but really upset that the beta is in FALL OF 2027…

      • 8 hours

I guess they had to announce it now to explain why we’re not getting an annual expansion this year.

  • 2 days

Oh damn??? Looks like MMORPGs aren’t dead after all. I would have loved to see some gameplay but it’s nice knowing there’s an honest to god new mmo being made by a big studio.

      • 4 hours

Yeah but they reset development not long ago so I’d be surprised if it released any time before, like, 2029.

      • I want to get back into it, but isn’t it end of life? Wasn’t the last expansion the final one?

        • Oh heck no! Evercold was just recently announced. You might be thinking of Endwalker being the conclusion of the overarching story of the time. Dawntrail, the most recent expansion, is the start of a new multi-expansion story

      • 2 days

Same with gw2 and wow but we’re talking 21, 16, and 14 year old games here lol, every “major” new MMO since those 3 has died… it’s not exactly inaccurate to call the genre dead.

Shout-out the return of Gloria Victis next week too, best pvp MMO I’ve ever played, the sieges are insane.

      • Speaking of ffxiv, if I had a penny for every MMO trailer with tapestry artwork I’ve seen come out this year, I’d have two pennies, etc

(FFXIV Evercold trailer being the first one)
