I shop estate auctions. DVD/Blu-ray lots and the players always bid up I’m little bidding wars. Boxes of music CDs that are not classical or country get bid up pretty high. And vinyl that is not classical or country goes through the roof. Granted, that last one appears to be a popular wall ornament with the mid-generations.

Where are you? Most people I know can’t give away DVDs or music cds. They are effectively etrash at this point.
Vinyl on the other hand, suckers born every minute.

DVDs and CDs go for $1, BluRays $3-$5. This is across the 3 goodwills, a salvation army, and a Savers. Super cheap, HUGE selection. Vinyls too but they all went ebay pricing on them so even shit ones start at $10.

Estate auctions are their own thing, and vary by region. I didn’t realize it wasn’t everywhere.
Even so, when was the last time you saw any good music at goodwill?

True, every market is different. Makes sense to me every time I’m outbid.
Free and clear music added to your personal digital library. Resell the CD. Or keep it.
I bought a record player that digitizes, on estate auction, for $5. You can do the same with LPs. But it’s “cool” to hold onto those.
Country doesn’t sell. Or if it does, whole boxes go for a single digit.

The trick in many genres seems the market border crossing. Country might sell low priced in USA, where it originated, but might sell higher priced in Europe or Asia. In Brazil many vinyl records that in Europe easily sell for double or triple digits can still be found for silly prices by crate diggers. Similar until a decade ago with classical music: super common garage sale 1 € records could sell to China for 15 € or more if they were NM…

Sure, but with cost of shipping, most online estate sales are limited to the radius of local pickup, minus the very rich.

6 daysPirate and burn to a disc. I threw my old LiteOn BD burner in an external case. No ragrets.

Pirate -> Add to HTPC -> underwatched media to a jbod of old ass spinning HDDs -> unwatched/hard to find media to BluRay cold storage.

Why would you put it on a plastic disc? It’s a file, save it to you hard drive.
orca@orcas.enjoying.yachtsEnglish
5 daysArchival purposes. Movies and shows you watch often; games you’ve bought through GOG or Steam that you want to keep but don’t always want clunking around on a hard drive. I have an 8TB network drive that I throw more ephemeral files on. It also houses a bunch of ROMs.
- frongt@lemmy.zipEnglish5 days
I hope you’re using archival quality optical media, because burned retail discs can have a lifespan as short as 10 years

Maybe to save on storage space? Also, many people like to have their media on a physical disc, so that could also be why.
orca@orcas.enjoying.yachtsEnglish
6 daysBasically this. Archiving old games and things that you want to play but you don’t want them to constantly occupy hard drive space. I have an external 8TB drive connected to my router for other stuff I actively use.

Yep, I agree. Im the same way. Especially with how these asshats are trying to kill off physical media and make everything digital so they can take it from you. Gotta try and preserve as much as we can.

Lately I have to remind myself to refrain from suggesting friends to buy some of my favorite games because that money doesn’t go anywhere close to their creators anymore.

I feel that, even some of the biggest series, Minecraft, metal gear, and halo, all come to mind as, no one who worked on the originals gets money from a rerelease.
