I thought they were way too expensive even at launch. Switch games are also great with friends.

  • At this point console cost just as much as PC so why not get a PC or PC handheld if you can?

    • 5 hours

Because my hobby is gaming. I don’t have time to take on the additional hobby of fiddling with a PC.

Also, PC prices have gone up too, haven’t they?

    • Sony: Uh oh. Sales are down after our price increase. We won’t make our quarterly line going up. Shareholders will be pissed. What should we do?

      Executives: Raise prices.

  • 21 hours

CEOs: “I raised the price, why isn’t there more money in my bank?”

  • 21 hours

Oh so that’s why they’re rolling back the releasing games on PC thing

    Lol. Lmao even

    • Their strategy right now is literally “Let’s charge more to sell less, and let’s also kneecap a revenue stream that could prop us up during this memory crisis.” Sony has been winning so long that they forgot how easy it is to lose. They are gonna find out.

Edit: I just want to point out that Sony could have easily shifted this into a win. “Hey, this is Tim Sony, President of Sony. Right now, things are hard for everyone in the world of consumer electronics. For 20 years we’ve tried to bring you the best value in entertainment through quality games and low prices. Unfortunately, today, we have to raise our prices to match cost. I know you don’t like it. I don’t like it, either. However, we still want to give you the best value we can. While we can’t control the cost of components, we can control the cost of our first party games. So, now when you buy a new PS5, you get your choice of any first party game you want for free. Any game, no exceptions. We’re also throwing in 6 months of PlayStation Plus as well, which gives you even more games to play immediately. While we wish we could bring you a lower priced console, we are trying our best to make it so that you don’t have to spend more to have the same amount of fun. Now, get out there, and kill, kill, kill.”

      • “Also, all our first party games will be released on PC at a later date. Why would we leave money on the table? That’s just stupid!”

      • Kinda weird at the end he called for a school shooting, but otherwise good PR.

It’s a reference to the Dungeon Crawler Carl series of books. If you haven’t read them, I can’t recommend them enough. The audiobooks are also incredibly well done.

      • 20 hours

Oh shit, you just reminded me that the new DCC book is out. I know what I’m doing on my lunch break.

    • I assumed it was because they saw handheld computers and the Steam Machine as serious competition to Sony’s own hardware.

      • 6 hours

Handheld computers are competition to the PlayStation in the sense that Sony would want everyone who owns one to buy a PS5 instead but not in the sense that those consumers having an option is hurting sales significantly. I could not find actual numbers, but analysts seem to be estimating that Valve has sold about 6 million Steam Decks in total. For comparison, Sony sold 1.5 million PS5s last quarter, which is devastating since they sold 2.8 million the year before.

Also, that sales gap is going to get worse in the short term. Instead of raising Steam Deck prices or reducing profit margins, Valve has decided to stop selling systems until RAM prices come back down.

      • 21 hours

That was my initial thought, but they don’t even have a current gen handheld do they?

(And if they do, frankly the marketing team should be fired)

Perhaps the steam machine is a legit concern for them though

        • No, they don’t have a handheld, and that’s kinda the problem. The ecosystem is growing without them. Steamdeck, Xbox ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch. That’s 100% of their competitors, each with handhelds that nearly came out of nowhere in the last few years. Sony is SUPER behind the curve on this, and no amount of “New PSVita5” is gonna save them. They biffed it with the mobile market, and instead of buying in and playing second fiddle, they want to take their ball and go home.

          • 17 hours

No, they don’t have a handheld, and that’s kinda the problem

PlayStation Portal enters the chat /s

        • They do, but its bad.

Its just a handled device that stores from only your ps5. Can nor play anything itself.

    • Which is weird to me, because the software and licensing is where all the money is. And it isn’t subject to supply chain issues the way that hardware is.

  • 13 hours

They will probably have to raise it by a hundred more at least. Gaming is about to get more expensive.

    • 7 hours

I bought the original Switch for SMT:V, which then took years to release, and shortly after got a PC release. At first I liked the console, but honestly the Steam Deck is heaps and bounds better.

What really drove me off the fucking edge is how garbage and overpriced Nintendo’s hardware is. They purposely design things to not be repairable and as fucked as possible, and they use horrible quality components to make their stuff.

After sitting in its case in a drawer for a few months, my joycon analogue sticks started melting. The rubber just lost its integrity. If Nintendo cared about that kind of thing, they’d design the joycons to have the tips be able to pop off, but no. Further, the component itself is garbage and drifts. That’s well known. You can get replacement hall effect sticks for $10, or you can buy a new set of joycons for ~$80.

Nintendo could have designed these to be easily maintainable by users, they could’ve designed them to not have the drift problem. They actively chose to be anti-consumer, and with the Switch 2 they doubled down on it.

8bitdo offers a clone of the Switch Pro controller, that’s better, has more features, and somehow they magically manage to keep the price lower than the official Switch Pro controller, despite not being a massive corporation with pockets as deep as Nintendo.

It was Nintendo’s fastest selling console of all time. So, yes.

      • The SEGA Dreamcast had the Guinness World Record for Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in a Single Day.

For this record, set in 1999, it sold >225,100 units to generate $98.4 million USD in revenue. Since then, it has only been replaced by video game software and not consoles (from my research, the Dreamcast was replaced by GTA IV in 2008, and held the record for ~9 years though I dont have any books or historical site references prior to 2008 too verify).

Of course, everyone remembers the Dreamcast for how highly successful it was, and its massive sales numbers.

“Fastest selling console” is a meaningless title when more people buy video games every year compared to the previous year, so “fastest selling console” is always going to be next years console until the market crashes.

        • 17 hours

Okay but the question was, “people are buying the Switch 2?” to which the answer, supported by it being the fastest selling console of Nintendo’s life, is an emphatic yes, they are.

        • Mario kart 8 came out in 2014 and it’a still full price with predatory dlc because they know kids will annoy their parents to buy them.

    • I got one for free because Amazon fucked up and had a unit in the storage containers I bought a while back.

Thing’s just collecting dust while I wait for Duskbloods. Which I may not even buy because IIRC, it has a PvP focus and I don’t want to subscribe to Nintendo Online.

      • Ok, I just had a great idea. Are you ready for this? It’s such a good idea. You may want to sit down for this.

        Ok, you ready? Cool.

You could just send the Switch 2…to me! For free!!!

        ISN’T THAT A GREAT IDEA???

        • 19 hours

Not bad, but I have an even greater idea. Just send it to me instead. Don’t you agree?

  • 18 hours

Honestly, even with original prices, and even with the rising cost of computers, I don’t see myself investing in anything stationery that isn’t a PC.

I don’t fuck with Nintendo and I don’t see myself buying a Switch any time soon, but this is still 100% more likely to happen than buying a PlayStation.

Another factor: Nintendo actually make games that look like they’re happy being games while most Sony exclusives look like they’d rather be movies and begrudgingly settled for being games. I hate that so much.

Luckily, I don’t have to worry about any of this for now. Steam Deck FTW.

Platinum better find a way to bring Astral Chain to Steam though 😅
