8 hoursHer surname checks out. Like, “respectfully sorry, I can’t use AI. I’m better than that.”
- Lovable Sidekick@lemmy.worldEnglish2 hours
People who’ve never done any acting probably can’t appreciate the silliness of this. It’s not a bold, noble stance against AI, it’s a normal conversation between a director and an actor about whether some post-production work will be necessary, and the actor says, “No, I’ll just do it.” People here apparently have no idea how completely normal and inconsequential this is. Maybe Emily Blunt is already an anti-AI icon for other comments, IDK, but any actor could have had this convo without having any opinion on AI.
- Deacon@lemmy.worldEnglish21 hours
What’s crazy about this, at least to me, is that you have in Emily Blunt one of the best at using and changing her voice in her acting. I always think of her and Tom Hardy as the best in this area. It’s like they are voice acting on top of their normal acting. That’s a poor way to describe it, but it’s the best I can do.
I don’t want to take anything away from any other aspect of Emily Blunt’s toolkit as an actor. But using AI for any aspect of her voice acting is like trading a Bentley for a fucking Daewoo.
lechekaflan@lemmy.worldEnglish
20 hoursDaewoo.
Still never forget how bland those cars looked in the 90s.
- SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.worksEnglish14 hours
The Chevy Spark is uglycute, and a Daewoo in origin. So they tried to gloss up their design game… but made frog cars.
lechekaflan@lemmy.worldEnglish
8 hoursLook up Daewoo Racer. It was a hard sell in my country at a time when Japanese sedans dominated.

And that is a licensed version of the Opel Kadett E, after it was no longer produced in Germany.
The hatchback version of this was sold in Germany with a little facelift, basically all corners were a bit more rounded, but you could still recognize a somewhat familiar shape.
- SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.worksEnglish4 hours
This is now way off thread, but all the proportions look wrong on that car.
Here’s a very boxy car where the lines flow together and it aged well (1988):

19 hoursOh man, I remember seeing how Bentleys were much nicer than Daewoos too. Has anyone else noticed that?

23 hoursIts so odd that they even suggested having a machine do it when they already had the actor on payroll. They would’ve had to post process it and tune it anyway.
- HeartyOfGlass@piefed.socialEnglish19 hours
Tells me that AI was already ingrained in the process. Reeks of “well, we’re doing it here & here, why not with her voice, too?”
Hubi@feddit.orgEnglish
1 dayMaybe they should have used AI to write a better script. Or maybe it’s so ass because they actually did. Probably the worst film I’ve seen in the last 5 years, and that’s really saying something.
- ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zipEnglish14 hours
My theory is the original ending was super controversial in focus groups. The main characters were basically the next messiah, there was this whole subtext about usurping major religion, destabilizing the world, etc. The ending we got basically abandoned all character development up to that point. There was probably a better ending out there that got scrubbed in favor of a “Let’s just kinda play it safe” nothing burger.
- Auli@lemmy.caEnglish5 hours
And that is what is ruining cinema now a days. They focus rest everything and make it please everyone so it is just a bland story. Disney is really bad for this.
- kat_angstrom@lemmy.worldEnglish24 hours
Well now I kind of want to see it! What about it was particularly noteworthy, or was it just the modern “meh” of spectacle without plot?
Hubi@feddit.orgEnglish
24 hoursThis was way worse than the average “bad film” lol. It was completely nonsensical and so full of massive plot holes that it has to be some kind of record. And it wasn’t even bad in a fun way, just irritating and dumb unfortunately. Even the CGI sucked…
I would’ve walked out halfway through the film if I hadn’t been there with someone.
- tacosanonymous@mander.xyzEnglish20 hours
Absolutely this.
The tonal shifts were baffling. I didn’t know if it was supposed to be serious or funny. Like was it campy or bad? I do not know.
I do recall enjoying Blunt’s performance. Her acting is very good. Her dialogue and the script just brought it down though.
- tgcoldrockn@lemmy.worldEnglish23 hours
Imagine watching the main character, go up to another character and start berating them with listicles of moments in their lives (you as a viewer have no idea of) while simultaneously being annoyed that they feel compulsed to berate the other character with listicles of their lives. Which are supposed to be all these amazing and quiet moments which a strange person shouldn’t know. So the other character its getting all teary-eyed while the main character’s annoyance resolves into smugness who then cries and screams about all of it. Repeat.
- LincolnsDogFido@lemmy.zipEnglish14 hours
An overwhelming majority of the general public also liked Oppenheimer, so I think you may just be particularly hard to please.
Bahnd Rollard@lemmy.worldEnglish
23 hoursFrom everyhing ive seen, its a modern remake of close encounters, but with all the trappings of current year Hollywoo.
CD and special effects feel less magical, its the reason Project Hail Mary felt different. Everyone knew Ryan was acting along side a puppet. Good sci-fi is possible, but reality is too jaded and needs things to be a bit more hopeful.
- XLE@piefed.socialEnglish23 hours
No joke, I think it would have that kind of effect if Spielberg was actually using it. Now I have to go back to watch Duel from when he was brimming with ideas and not thoroughly cooked.

It’s Spielberg + aliens I would say. It was never good and even less approachable for non-American audiences.

1 dayShe also speaks russian and korean in the movie, I hope it sounded fluent to native speakers too. As someone who doesn’t speak those languages it was very convincing.
- DougPiranha42@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
As someone fluent in Alien, I can confirm she sounded like gibberish, but the accent was on spot.
JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyzEnglish
22 hoursThough rarely it has to. Someone speaking multiple entirely different languages usually can’t pronounce them all like a native speaker no matter how good they are, so small issues are perfectly acceptable.
It only really becomes a problem when movies try to convince us that it’s supposed to be their native language, e.g Scarlet Johansson as the Black Widow - who is supposed to be a Russian spy.
- halcyoncmdr@piefed.socialEnglish19 hours
Scarlet Johansson as the Black Widow - who is supposed to be a Russian spy.
Not a particularly good example to pick. She wouldn’t be a very effective Red Room spy if she had a native Russian accent she couldn’t disguise at all.
Should have picked something more like Tom Cruise… In anything.
JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyzEnglish
17 hoursI’m not saying she should have a Russian accent while speaking English - she is a spy, that would be stupid - but that Scarlet Johansson is pretty rubbish at speaking Russian, which her character should be perfectly fluent in as that’s her native language.
