My smart tube app wasn’t working tonight so watched YouTube on the normal app. I can’t believe people live like this, it’s actually unwatchable.
- 7 days
Seriously bro! I got revanced on my phone and smart tube next on the tv. I legit had to think about the last time I used the official app and it was nothing but angry memories. Waking up in the middle of a, and I’m not making this up, hour plus long ad! Always auto playing some ai slop bullshit about some murder or something slightly cosmological.
I was jarred by an ad playing during LOTR on HBO just now.
- 5 days
Okay how good is Smart Tube for ypu? I downloaded it to my family Fire TV but my mom just refuses to use it, so we watch long, loud, unbearable ads all the time. I get that there’s no algorithm to find videos, but can you import subscriptions? My mom has noticed YT never shows her a few of her subscribed channels in her recommended anymore.
- AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish4 days
It’s great. I’m pretty sure you can sign in so you get your algorithm and subscriptions. But it’s an incredible app. Infinitely better than the normal YouTube app.
- Voroxpete@sh.itjust.worksEnglish7 days
If you run Fcast receiver on your android TV device, you can cast to it from Grayjay without ads.

7 daysWhat’s the end game with YouTube? Will it eventually cut all videos and show nothing but ads?
- FosterMolasses@leminal.spaceEnglish7 days

The ironic part is that there was a time where I’d watch hours long compilation videos of funny ads, and even now I watch 90s nostalgia ones set to vaporwave mixes. Hell, every person and their grandmother I knew at one time watched the Superbowl “just for the ads”.
At some point, the goal of marketing shifted from “How do we keep your attention/whimsy” to “How can we force unwilling participants to comply?” Fuck that fascismo shit.
- dellish@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Ahhh, so similar to Facebook then. I don’t bother with that site either.
- 7 days
But like all corporations once that IPO went through they abandoned any semblance of morality at the alter of obscene profit.
- Lemminary@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Time to double down on the adblocks, then. I get it conceptually, but I still don’t understand this need for infinite growth at everyone’s expense.
- Soup@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Right? If I don’t otherwise pay for the service then sure, some ads are fine. Problem is that at this point I’m seeing ads every few minutes, and if the video restarts in a weird spot and reloads funny after I reopen my laptop I might even get the same ads looping after literally two seconds of video.
Also, I was paying for the service and then they gave a fuckload of support to Israel to spread propaganda so I stopped.
- BiomedOtaku@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish6 days
Dam ads exist ? Been on YouTube Revanced for 5 years now 😂😂🖕🖕 fuck you google.
I’d very much suggest everyone try YouTube Revanced.
- Tiresia@slrpnk.netEnglish6 days
Though android is likely going to crack down on them before the end of the year, so new users should switch to a degoogled or open source phone OS.
Or download the videos using ytdlp, and use a cable to transfer them to your phone like it’s 2012.
- Samskara@sh.itjust.worksEnglish6 days
Im using 1Blocker on Safari macOS and iOS and get no ads on YouTube.

Thanks, Google. I was trying to cut down my usage of YouTube.
What are the best Fedi alternatives?
- P1k1e@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
It’s what Lemmy was when I started up after reddit killed their 3rd party apps. Like a year later Lemmy exploded
- aquovie@lemmy.cafeEnglish7 days
When I checked the Fedi alternatives were far-right hangouts. Part of that unfortunate “free speech absolutist” == “asshole” phase.
It’s not Fediverse but I like Nebula. It’s more like a co-op so I don’t mind paying for it at all.
- 7 days
I mean alternative platforms, not alternative ways to use YouTube (although this looks useful in the meantime, so thanks anyway)
- Art3mis@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
I like nebula but it is pretty limited. Its mostly educational and essay type stuff. For the price it is amazing and the only streaming platform i have anymore. But i dont know if id call it a youtube alt unless you only watch that type of video. They have a handful of other things too but the variety just isnt there yet. The other thing i both like and dislike is the lack of comments.
I do recommend it though. Crazy affordable, owned by the creators, ad free. Just kind of niche still

I dunno. Some strange relic from the 1980s?
Kidding aside, it’s shocking how bad raw YT is. We watch it via Smartube (or PipePipe as needed). I can’t believe people watch “raw” youtube…it’s unwatchable.
If they ever quash SmartTube and PipePipe…well…I imagine Peertube, Nebula, Libby and Curiosity stream will suddenly become a great deal more popular.
I don’t think the powers that be fully grasp the (very delicate) knife edge they walk. They only stay in business so long as they aren’t annoying enough to be replaced. Actually, who am I kidding - they know that exactly and play the delicate “gently gently” boil frogs in a pot game like grandmasters.

The ads seem to be pretty variable depending on usage so I suspect not everyone is seeing the same thing. I rarely use YouTube in any form. When I do and I’m rawdogging it for whatever reason, it seems like I get a few short ads, like 30s or less. They’re annoying but not awful.
A friend keeps YouTube running constantly on his TV in the background while he works. He gets so many ads and they’re so long! Like several minutes of ads, mostly unskippable, over the course of a 15 minute video. I don’t know how people deal with that shit.
- RblScmNerfHerder@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
Man, they must LOVE people like him!
Surely, he must know he’s actively contributing to the issue. No?

I would be shocked if he cared. It’s just not amongst his concerns.

It’s all fine and fun until Google prevents people from installing third party APKs in a few months…
- boonhet@sopuli.xyzEnglish7 days
Can they? Because I’ve got a modified YouTube ipa on my iPhone and that’s more closed than Android could ever become in the span of the next few months.
- boonhet@sopuli.xyzEnglish7 days
I don’t remember the exact procedure for this, but here’s the summary. You’ll first want to install sidestore or sidestore + livecontainer. Computer needed for that. You’ll also want a stock YouTube ipa file that you can then mod with YouTube Plus or similar utility.
You’ll have to update livecontainer (if you installed it) and YouTube every 7 days unless you have a dev license but Sidestore does it with a single button press in-app so it’s not that inconvenient. You can install ipas within sidestore (limited amount at a time) or livecontainer (as many as you want I believe, but it’s more complicated) without connecting to a computer once the initial setup is done
- workgood@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish7 days
they wont. thats just bs. there will be advanced flow to use ,and adb to install.
- hietsu@sopuli.xyzEnglish7 days
For us advanced users true, but for the bulk of people where ”just use this app instead” has worked previously, will not do it anymore. Whole lotta more hoops to jump through and google knows many will not be able to.
- Scrollone@feddit.itEnglish7 days
There will be an advanced flow for now, maybe (they didn’t explain how it will work). But our freedom is getting restricted nonetheless
- BlakeFox808@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
Gen X made 90 minute cassette recordings of their favorite music. Back then you could lower the volume to ignore ads and wait for the DJ to trigger your recording. Today I just use the mute on the remote and have my other device handy to watch some other content while waiting for show to come back to the main content. It’s always good to have a mantra about adverting by associating it in your head as indoctrination “Poison” which is what it is essentially.

Am I bad because I pay for YouTube? I watch it so so much on different devices and also use YouTube music instead of Spotify. The paid teir hasn’t undergone enshittification yet (it always does). Thats when ill stop.
- fierysparrow89@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
I’m long past the point of even considering paying Google a dime for other people’s content.
I’m getting sick of titles like these “… this changes everything…”, “scientists are mystified”, “…nobody knew…”, or some ridicoulus question as title. Majority of creators are hinting lately that yt “suggests” how to title and organize the topic for maximum visibility and monetization. In effect mandating their enshittification features.
Nvm, the moment NewPipe stops being able to play a video in a normay way is the end of yt for me. Just like I left reddit for lemmy.
- comrade19@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
Yeah damn I refuse to click on that stuff. I like the slow content which is what I’m subscribed to and is all ill watch
- FosterMolasses@leminal.spaceEnglish7 days
Yeah you’re literally part of the problem lol
You’re actively funding enshittification, at least the rest of us are innocent
- Bluefruit@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Nothing wrong with that. I pay for YouTube premium. Tbh I got fed up with all the hoops on mobile so I just started paying for it and honestly, its been a good fit for me.
I watch a ton of YouTube content so paying for it to support creators and not having ads is fine with me.
- Bluefruit@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
According to an LTT video that broke down thier revenue about 11 months ago, 45% of your premium sub is divided among creators that you watch.
Not sure how thats calculated, but it seems to be a pretty sizable chunk according to LTT.
Skip to around 4:50 in the video

Being able to cancel Spotify was a nice bonus too.

What do you mean? UBlock Origin kills all the YouTube ads. Not giving money to Google is perfectly fine.
- prole@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish6 days
I have literally never seen a YouTube ad, I think, in my entire life. I would never pay for that experience.
- psx_crab@lemmy.zipEnglish7 days
I too pay for youtube because i also use music and use it in 3 separated place. Honestly it worth it for me, and it’s not as expensive even after the price hike recently. Until it gone to the shitter i’ll keep using it.

You’re not bad, google is bad.
I’d suggest already exploring alternatives now. There’s front ends, alternate links, … all with pro’s and cons.
I will say though, once you stop using an account and cut out the feed/algo out of your diet it becomes apparent very quick how much of a grip they hold on our attention just by the layout and such. Now I just check 2 channels every few days and even that’s losing my interest.
- Canaconda@lemmy.caEnglish6 days
Unpopular opinion but youtube + music is good value.
But my journey here was unique.
I grew up during the era when ipods / mp3 players incentivized having personal libraries of music files. After itunes became hostile towards that I switched to Google Music which allowed you to upload music files and stream them to your devices. It was great because I had some obscure remixes and indy band albums that I’d lost the CD for years ago.Ended up paying for Google Music after a 3 month trial.
Eventually Google Music became Youtube Music and with it came Youtube Premium. Tried Spotify but it didn’t have some artists that I can’t remember now anyways. So I just kept paying for youtube music and not seeing ads on youtube.

6 daysWe need to pick our battles. I don’t see much difference in paying Google for a service than having a Spotify family plan like I do. I know spotify has its own problems and my money would be more ethically spent on some other service, but with everything else going on life I can’t be arsed to switch to anything right now. For me it gives enough value for the money spent and that’s good enough for now.
- Canaconda@lemmy.caEnglish6 days

Thanks more making lemmy just a little bit redditer. I’ll block you now

6 daysI am talking about ethics here. Not your favourite method of listening to music.
Paying money to Google is one of the worst unethical decisions you can do.
Hate me as you want, but this is just the raw truth.
