Well the only reason why I didn’t get switch 2 because that’s the very first Nintendo console that you can’t pirate. And I really don’t mind.
- goombakid@lemmy.worldEnglish1 hour
I got one simply because it’s usually the launch model/first iteration of Nintendo’s consoles that get hacked first. As soon as it does…
- oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zipEnglish2 hours
Not with that attitude. It’ll be figured out.
Intentionally buying only ones that are pirateable seems a little backwards.
- melsaskca@lemmy.caEnglish6 hours
Fuck corporate greed. My library rents switch games and for every three games I rent, only one is something I might pay for (but don’t have to). Who wants to spend 90 plus dollars just to take a chance on a game you might play for 10 minutes and decide you don’t like it?
- 4 hours
Hence why we should be fighting for rights with digital goods. eBooks can be checked out at the library, albeit not without multiple fights to get something relatively fair, and there’s no good reason why this can’t be implemented for all other digital goods, other than like you said, corporate greed.

Nintendo is not your friend. It has no interest in passing any of its potential savings onto you, and the only reason it’s ever interested in your bank account is when it’s thinking about how much money it can get out of it.
Some (too many) people fail to understand this extremely basic concept.
iamthetot@piefed.caEnglish
1 dayThis is true of all companies in a capitalist society. People love to shit on Nintendo but Sony, Microsoft, Valve, yes even your previous Gabe is not your friend.

8 hoursThis is true of all companies in a capitalist society. People love to shit on Nintendo but Sony, Microsoft, Valve, yes even your previous Gabe is not your friend.
There’s a difference between publicly-traded and privately-owned companies. I’m not saying that large corporations are your friend, but it’s rather disingenuous to categorize all of them with the same black & white stance.
iamthetot@piefed.caEnglish
6 hoursWhat difference are you thinking of? Because I agree, there are differences. Nintendo does shitty things under the guise of enriching the shareholders. Valve does shitty things to enrich only Gabe.
- Zorque@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
Yeah, but some at least have some consumer friendly policies while they’re squeezing you dry.
Not saying you should cozy up to suck them off or anything, but throwing everything in a single bucket labeled “bad” is big smooth brain moves.
- 1 day
Yeah, it’s honestly very sad to see people defend these gaming corporations blindly, yes, including Steam, when they’re doing anti-consumer things.
- ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zipEnglish7 hours
Their cartel like price fixing policies raise prices across all sales platforms, regardless if they deal with steam codes or not.
Also the child gambling.
- Cethin@lemmy.zipEnglish2 hours
The price parity is the big one for me. They have almost total market control, and they use this to prevent competition. We all know no other marketplace can compete on utility, because Steam has a massive head start. Their other option is to compete on price, and Valve has forced this to not be allowed. Somehow some people still defend them for this.
- 1 day
Sure, here are my small list personal list of gripes, mostly minor except the first one.
- Their continued stance on loot boxes and enabling of gambling.
- They did try to do a paid mod system back in the day and got shutdown by gamers pretty quick.
- Their initial discontinuation of batteries and LCD screens for their steam deck after only four years.
- Their continued stance that they are selling revokable, non-transferable licenses and not games that you own.
Steam’s a great company and overall very pro-consumer company in my opinion, more so than most of the other companies in the PC gaming realm but I’ll criticize Steam when I see something I believe is anti-consumer regardless of my like for them because end of they day they’re still just a corporation that prioritizes profits over people and it’s just one death away from being enshitified like the rest of them.
- BreakerSwitch@lemmy.worldEnglish1 hour
Let’s not forget they’ve been emulating amazons efforts to drive prices up across the market
- MBech@feddit.dkEnglish6 hours
Don’t forget that the current refund system wasn’t born out of the benevolence of Valve. It all came from external pressure, mainly from Australia and somewhat EU. Steam never wanted you to be able to refund a game that doesn’t work, they were forced to. And even now they’re trying to hide the ability to refund games as much as possible.
- NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zipEnglish20 hours
That have zero choice on the licensing at least for games they dont publish.
On the other hand they have kept installers for me long after the publisher has pulled their product.
- 18 hours
I disagree. They’re are a multi billion dollar company that is the defacto/largest distributor, they’ve got the clout to push for effective change and they’ve been vocally against the secondary market or transfers, including on death.
Also you said it yourself, they could easily do this for the games they publish and yet here we are.
I do appreciate they keep delisted games around at least.
- NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zipEnglish17 hours
If they tried to change the terms, the companies would definitely simply leave.
Personally, I don’t care. I find it weird people want to somehow have an account after death. I just treat it like a library that is there for me and the money saved vs any other way plus the convenience is huge. Its not any different than paying for a round of golf or 10 frames of bowling. Except I can play as many rounds as I want for the same price.
I watch all the other stores requiring some kind of payment for what valve provides for free. Even less than what valve provides for free.
I save so much money compared to anywhere else that as long as I die before valve (maybe thats the bigger issue), it is money well spent. My kids dont want my account they have their own.
iamthetot@piefed.caEnglish
1 dayIn addition to the other comment, the only reason their famous refund policy exists is because Australia made them do it. And I really cannot stress how shitty the loot box stance is. Gamers hate loot boxes by and large yet somehow largely give Valve a pass despite the fact they hugely popularized the concept in the gaming space.
- DrPop@lemmy.worldEnglish20 hours
My first instance of lootboxes was when Valve introduced them in TF2. I was a dumb 20 year old living with my parents so i had disposable income. I wasted at least $200 on keys.
- NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zipEnglish20 hours
Gamers apparently love loot boxes, lol.
They have zero effect on the gameplay though. Ignore them if you want to, it really makes no difference.

“The common thread among Plaintiffs’ claims is that it is somehow ‘unfair’; that Nintendo has not retroactively adjusted its prices for completed sales in response to the outcome of the tariff litigation,” Nintendo’s statement continues, adding that this is “not how commercial transactions work.”
Then why the fuck would Nintendo themselves get a refund?
- innermachine@lemmy.worldEnglish24 hours
Don’t forget how many transactions have been impacted by the tarrifs. Hell we lost on some fixed price jobs at my work because we priced things before the tarrifs went in and by the time we ordered we were basically paying to finish a promised job. People need not be mad at Nintendo, this issue was caused by the pedophile in chief.
- 3 hours
People need not be mad at Nintendo, this issue was caused by the pedophile in chief.
I’m in total agreement here, except for the fact that this is a separate issue. Nintendo didn’t bring about the tariffs but they are the ones asking for the refund and deciding not to give it back to the people who paid that money in the first place, so while they aren’t to blame for the tariffs, they are to blame for keeping the tariff refunds.

1 dayHave they actually done so and has it been effective? I doubt so. Unless you are d2c this is an enormous effort that may not be worth it. Even then you incurred costs and insecurities hence probably can’t afford to be overly generous unless you are demanding much more money than your service costs to provide.
- 1 day
Ah, moving goalposts now I see. CAH has provided the forms to submit your receipt and get your refund and go ask about how effective it is yourself because I wasn’t arguing or making a case about effectiveness.
I’m simply arguing that there are companies that are trying to be decent companies and pro-consumer, not arguing about the effectiveness of their pro-consumer stance.
While we’re at it let’s just get your whataboutism that you’ll also try to pull out of the way, yes most corporations will also not be making any moves to refund their customers when they get their illegal tariffs refunded and that also makes them anti-consumer asshats.
- ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish23 hours
And Nintendo didn’t pay the higher rate. They passed the costs over to the consumer. Nintendo got exactly what they paid for.
- ms.lane@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
I agree that there is a clear legal distinction, but it leaves a sour taste. Nintendo should have made this right for PR.
Though, on the other side of it, Stargate project is the reason DRAM prices went to the moon, so USA suffering a little is schadenfreude for me and probably Nintendo too.
- tmyakal@infosec.pubEnglish1 day
Nintendo should have made this right for PR.
Ha! Hahaha! Haha! When the fuck has Nintendo ever worried about PR? They’ve got their place in the market completely on lock and will open litigation against anyone and everyone who even looks at their IP in a way they don’t like. Nintendo could release a console that required a pint of blood every time you boot it up, and as long as a Zelda comes out on it, they’ll still sell out.
- ms.lane@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
They did those things, and also gave early 3DS owners a bunch of free games for buying the console during a bad period.
Nintendo are fickle, but this seems like the type of PR thing they’d of been in to.
- Cethin@lemmy.zipEnglish2 hours
That example costs them nothing, assuming it was digital. Nintendo may do something good when the price is $0, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them do something good for an actual cost.
- Katana314@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
I’d say this argument probably doesn’t apply to something like, say, food. People can’t just opt out of eating. They can change their luxury spending to stuff that’s cheaper and doesn’t have to get imported.
I’d definitely like for this argument to be applied in Nintendo’s case, and I’ll be pleasantly surprised if a judge agrees, I guess I’m a little pessimistic though. Maybe I just have a low view of the justice system right now.

I’m not sure what Nintendo were meant to do. They probably shipped less units because of pricing. It would be impossible to actually hand that cash back to customers.
The refund just means that the consumer paid for it once, then the taxpayer paid for it again. Yes, they are the same people.

1 dayAs if anyone needed more reasons to stop giving Nintendo any money. Getting paid twice for one transaction isn’t how it works.
The buyers paid the extra tax to Nintendo to cover Nintendo’s extra cost. Then Nintendo gets a rebate on the tax. So they just got that extra tax money for no fucking reason.

Holy fuck, you just can’t differentiate reality and the way you imagine things should be.
People are put in charge, one way or another. The rules are made. You don’t get to sue people for following the rules. Get better leaders and change the fucking rules if you don’t like it. I’m not sure if you replied to the correct post mate because nothing you said has been said by me lmao.

Idk where I have ever said they don’t. But you don’t get to buy something for a set price that is clearly communicated before and then demand a refund when you find out it’s actually cheaper lmao. That’s the dumbest take ever and the fact you would sue for it is beyond me.
If the device was locked behind a 50€/month subscription or something that wasn’t communicated clearly before, hey, go sue. Absolutely appropriate. But buying something and then sueing later because you want money back for no other reason than: “WELL THEY GET MONEY BACK!” is karen behavior.
Quit carrying water for soulless companies.
I think that’s the cringest thing you can say. I’m not whiteknighting for nintendo, the company can go fuck themselves up the ass for all I care. However, the diffrence between you and me is that I’m looking at this situation from a neutral point of view while you are already biased before you even read anything about it.
Imagine a small retailer selling something for X€ to a large company, then wins back some tariff money and then gets sued by that large company for damages. Would you also consider that fine? Because I’m pretty sure your moral compass would shift immediately in that situation.

Genuinely don’t care. The world sucks. I bought the Switch 2 at launvh and knew our dipshit president and the fuckass tech oligarchy were going to drive the price up but I wantes it anyway for needlessly sentimental reasons.
